PROGRESSION 1 ASSIGNMENT: RHETORICAL ANALYSIS For this assignment, you will perform an in-depth rhetorical analysis of “Monster Culture (Seven Theses)” by Jeffrey Jerome Cohen. A rhetorical analysis essay systematically examines one or more rhetorical features of a text in order to deeply explore how they work to achieve the text’s purpose. In a rhetorical analysis essay, you are not simply concerned with what the text is saying but instead with how the text is constructed, and why the writer might have selected certain rhetorical features or strategies. Essay Assignment: Analyze a few significant aspects of “Monster Culture” in order to develop an argument regarding the intended or imagined audience for that essay. You should aim to: 1) characterize the intended audience, and 2) evaluate Cohen’s stance towards his topic and audience To do so, you must: 3) analyze and discuss the functions of Cohen’s rhetorical choices within “Monster Culture,” Your essay must contain a persuasive thesis claim that it develops and supports through analysis of evidence from the text. “Monster Culture (Seven Theses)” is an essay by Cohen that speaks about the use of a monstrous figure in historical texts. It is the discussion of a text involving
beasts, demons and freaks. The intended audience of this essay is those people who are interested in fiction dealing with the supernatural as well as the writers who like writing about the supernatural creatures in their write-ups. This essay is an interesting piece of literature because it deals with the human psychology of human beings wanting to know more and more about the supernatural, the irresistible attraction that we have to know more about something restricted and evil and how the writer persuades the readers to actually believe his theory of the monster culture by the use of various rhetorical devices.
Cohen makes an interesting analysis of the monster culture in his essay. Rhetorical devices used in this essay are logos, ethos, and pathos by the writer to connect with his audience and persuade the readers about his thoughts on monster culture. Before going in detail of the rhetorical devices that Cohen used in his essay, let us do a quick one line summary on the seven theses that Cohen says about the monster culture. So, the first thesis speaks about how the monster being is a cultural body or a cultural entity. The second one talks about how the monster always gets away with everything. It creates destruction all around and then runs away. The third thesis speaks about how the monster escapes categorization. The fourth one speaks about how the monster is someone among us but we are unable to recognize it. The fifth one is about how the monster always inspects the possible and the impossible, the limitations, and whenever possible hits with something that we never expect. The sixth one explains how the monster practices everything that is forbidden. The seventh and the last one is about the monster dwelling at the very end of a threshold.
Cohen portrays to his audience that the characteristics of a monster are just used as a symbol of things that already exist in our culture.
