I have been an educator for decades with considerable experience with research. During his third-year summer, I worked closely with Guang on the research project--Translate BEAT as a Python Library research project. As is evident from his CV, Guang has excelled throughout his academic career with many notable accomplishments. I will focus on my experiences with Guang, primarily those related to his research abilities, demonstrating the qualities necessary for your program: excellent knowledge, data analysis skills, and critical thinking. Guang has outstanding sensitivity to data with solid programming skills. In our research, Guang independently produced a comprehensive data analysis on current existing Generalized Random Forest (GRF) algorithms. He compared works from three Python and R libraries and synthesized multiple performance plots that show the marginal distribution of Tau True prediction for protected and unprotected variables. His analysis was completed to a very high standard, and he was open and receptive to feedback and has shown resilience and perseverance thought. In addition to considerable intellect and good data science skills, Guang is an individual who consistently exhibits curiosity and motivation to learn. In order to translate the machine BEAT method to Python, he has studied all the mathematics and statistics of random forest algorithms, having researched relevant papers to provide quality care and participating actively to point out the right way for the project. I believe this experience along with his overall attitude and ability to work independent would stand to him through graduate research. During the summer, Guang also demonstrated remarkable communication skills put both the subject as well as the mentor at ease, thus facilitating unbiased and effective discussion. Guang has good clarity on the various data analysis and machine learning packages, especially Keras and Sklearn, which immensely helped us do a comparative study through multiple methods. Furthermore, I was constantly impressed with Guang’s well-organized presentation. Every time before our meeting, he templated the current progress on the notion, including all types of charts and code, to provide the team with a comprehensive insight into the project. His presentation was outstanding – wide in scope yet presented efficiently and effectively. Guang also strikes me as he is very creative and patient when dealing with statistical errors. When he realized that the existing python library’s segmentation structure did not know which feature was segmented, he built the method by the averaging scheme of calculation. At the project's end, he successfully published the BEAT method to Pypi, which every machine learning researcher can use. He is driven to understand how things work well and why things do not work well. His excellent critical thinking will continue bringing insightful ideas to his future academic career. In conclusion, I am happy to give Guang my highest recommendation for your graduate program. In my experience, he has demonstrated excellence in everything he puts his mind to, whether designing an experiment or collaborating with others.
