Background
The Big Five personality attributes are thought to be related to perceptions of one's own physical health and longevity. Considering the significance of both frameworks in the aging process, it is remarkabl
e that no research has yet extensively acknowledged their mutual relationship over time. Researchers used information from the ILSE research, a 20-year-long longitudinal study that apprehended attitudes and personalities toward own physical health and longevity at four measuring points over the course of 20 years, with two participant cohorts in middle age and old age (Allen 583).
Purpose of Study
The purpose of this study was to investigate the formative co-dynamics of perceptions toward one's physical health, aging, longevity, and personality in middle and late adulthood. Physiological and psychological resources, such as subjective and objective well-being and health, or personality factors, including rigidity, appear to influence perceptions toward aging and physical health throughout adult life (Allen et al. 783). Personality, as defined by the Big Five personality characters, is another attribute that has gained some consideration. Personal characteristics and perceptions toward own aging and physical health are strongly related; nevertheless, research that encompasses large samples in wider age ranges with multiple measurement instances over a significant observation time frame is scarce, leaving the formative dynamics of perceptions toward own aging and physical health unknown (Dixon-Gordon et al. 3).
Hypothesis
Personality attributes are reasonably stable and broad variables that define people's differences throughout their lives. Such variables have an impact on the ways people perceive their aging and physical health, albeit not ubiquitously but rather age-, trait-specific, and -time.
Sample and Procedures
Researchers collected information from the ILSE research, a 20-year demographically longitudinal study throughout Germany that included four measurement instances. Participants were selected randomly in 1993/1994 through town registers in two metro regions in West and East Germany, which contain information on all residents of the respective societies. The respondents were categorized by gender, region, birth cohort, and 2 adult cohorts. The midlife cohort was born between 1950 as well as 1952, while the older years cohort was born between 1930 and 32.
