Students must answer Multiple Answer questions about OS operation, and report on selected OS aspects and algorithms such as virtual memory, process scheduling and mobile operating systems. After successful completion of this assignment, students should be able to: a. Report on the basics, and provide examples, of operating systems structure and functionality, including memory allocation virtual memory, demand paging and process and device management. b. Describe the integration of hardware, operating systems and application software. c. The first part of assignment 1 focuses on the basic concepts of the current operating systems that is marked for 3% of the total marks and the second part is an extension of first part with memory management and process management covering the remaining 7% of the total marks. Students have to submit the first part by the end of week 3. Part B need to be submitted in week 7. • All work must be submitted on Moodle by the due date along with a title Page. • The assignment must be in MS Word format, 1.5 spacing, 11-pt Calibri (Body) font and 2.54 cm margins on all four sides of your page with appropriate section headings. • Reference sources must be cited in the text of the report, and listed appropriately at the end in a reference list using IEEE referencing style. An Operating System is system software that manages the computer hardware. It acts as an intermediary between the user and the computer hardware. It is the basis for all application programs. It provides a convenient environment for the user to execute the programs. Following
are the types of operating system based on the applications:
· Mainframe computers- Mainframe computers are high performance computers with throughput as fast as possible. They have large number of processors and huge amount of memory. Large organizations use mainframe computer to solve complex and critical problems that process large amount of data. Almost every mainframe computer has the ability to run multiple operating systems and can replace many servers. Some of the main advantages of mainframe computer are:
· High Performance computing- It has the inbuilt capacity to run complex programs with high speed.
· Scalability- High speed processors can be added to the system to increase performance. Also the memory in the storage devices can be increased.
· Virtualization system- To resolve memory limitation issue system is divided into logical segments so as to increase computing performance.
· Multiprocessor Systems- As the names suggest single system has more than one processor sharing common RAM, common computer bus, the clock and sometimes peripheral devices. Also known as parallel system or tightly coupled systems. The main objective of using the multi processor systems are:
· Increased throughput
· Increased reliability
· Economical
Some multiprocessor use symmetric multi processing in which identical copies of processor communicate with each other to complete a task. On contrary in asymmetric multiprocessor systems different processors are assigned a specific task.
· Time Sharing Systems-It is a logical extension of multiprocessor systems in which multiple users share the computer system simultaneously. The multiple users are given an expression that the entire system is dedicated to them as the CPU switches rapidly between the users. CPU scheduling and multiprogramming used so as to share the common CPU among the users at once. These systems are more complex than multiprogramming systems. Some of the advantages are:
· CPU idle time is reduced
· Multiple application can run simultaneously
· Eliminates duplication of software
· Distributed Systems- Distributed operating system depend on networking among the nodes. It c contains multiple components located on different machines, which coordinate and communicate actions in order to appear as a single coherent working system to the user. High speed buses are used for the communication among the various nodes. They handle jobs done which are executed by various computers systems located at different locations.
· Clustered Systems- Clustered system are similar to parallel system as they gather multiple CPU and can be viewed as a single system. These systems are created when two or more system are coupled together which are independent computers having common...
