Prepare a self-introduction in the form of an “elevator pitch.” The presentation should be no longer than 90 seconds, about the time it would take to get from the ground floor to the top floor of an office building in an elevator. Consider the following items as possible things to discuss in your self-introduction:

  • Consider what your goals are. What do you want to learn more about through networking? This might be a specific job, an industry, or how to apply a skill set.

  • Determine and describe the most relevant pieces of information about yourself. Examples include a recent externship or job in the field; why a course or newspaper article sparked your interest; transferrable skills developed through an event, interaction, or position.

This is often called an “elevator speech,” because you should imagine that you are stuck in an elevator and you need to tell the people around you about yourself before they get off.

Think about how you can use this short time not only to introduce yourself, but also to convey something about who you are and what you do. Think about “how” you will speak to them. Will you look at them? Will you smile? Will you use gestures? Sometimes how you present is just as important as what you say.
