Practitioner reflexivity alongside other qualities and dispositions is core to developing expertise in clinical reasoning. When you are working with patients do you:
• critique your own thinking, e.g., look for flaws in your logic or biases and assumptions;
• examine the influence you are having on your critical thinking, e.g., are you tired or distracted or lacking motivation;
• examine the degree of trust established with your patient and the consequent quality of the information being provided;
• identify environmental influences on your thinking, e.g., time constraints and high workloads leading to rushed assessment and treatment and
• identify sociocultural influences, e.g., how is your thinking shaped by expectations or needs of other staff members such as doctors or nurses?
