SUBCULTURE POWERPOINT/PREZI PRESENTATION According to yourdictionary.com the definition of a subculture is a cultural group with distinct patterns, behaviors, etc. that often vary from the mainstream groups in society. A cultural subgroup differentiated by status, ethnic background, residence, religion, or other factors that functionally unify the group and act collectively on each member. They have a unique set of beliefs and values that don’t necessarily align with the wider culture. They exist all over the world in various cultures. For this assignment choose one of the subcultures below to research. It has to have members that exist today. Create a PowerPoint/Prezi presentation about it that will answer the following questions. Each answer has to be thorough with at least three slides that contain information, photos, charts, graphs, etc. that help in answering the questions. So, it is a minimum of 12 slides. This is a two-part project. PART ONE: First is creating your own project. PART TWO: Second is after you upload it to a discussion board, you need to view the other PowerPoint presentations of your group members. Check the group assignments to see where you belong. You will leave comments for your group members’ presentations and respond to those who answered you. As you did for the last presentation, you will have a private “Commentary” sheet to fill out for me. Each commentary section will be at least two paragraphs long. These should be at least 5 or 6 sentences long. One paragraph will mention whether they answered the four questions and what you thought about how they did that. The second paragraph will be a discussion of how creative (or not) they were with their PowerPoint where you will stress what you liked in particular, what was missing, or how they could improve it for next time. This Commentary Assignment will be available for you on that week with specifics included. Slides Here are the four topics that your slides will discuss. There should not be just photos with a few words, but with substantial paragraphs of information. You can use bullet points as well, but NOT ONLY. Also, don’t just have text without visuals! Each slide should include photos, graphs, maps, ect. Topics to Be Covered 1) Use these capitalized titles on each slide to make it clear. The first set of slides should offer this information: a. SUBCULTURE NAME: The type of subculture you are presenting and why you chose it. b. HISTORY: Give background on how this subculture began. Its history. c. CHARACTERISTIC: What are the characteristics that define this culture? Examples of some characteristics: age group, fashion, language, interests, ethnicity, social/economic status, location where they live, ect. 2)The second set of slides should offer this information: a. BELIEFS/IDEAS: What are the central beliefs/ideas or values of this culture? b. RITUALS/PRACTICES: Mention any particular rituals that they may do or products they may make. c. GROUP ACTIVITIES/FAMILY LIFE: What is group/family life like? 3)The third set of slides should offer this information: a. DIFFERENCES FROM NORM: What makes them so different from the so called “norm”? b. REJECTION OF NORMAL SOCIETY: Mention things about the “normal society” that this subculture rejects/doesn’t like or differs from. c. HOW TO JOIN: Can anyone join this subculture? If not, why? If so, how? 4. The last set of slides should offer this information: a. CHALLENGES/STEROTYPES: What are particular challenges/stereotypes that this culture has to deal with? b. MY THOUGHTS: What do you think about this subculture group? c. WRAP UP: Wrap up with a summary of what you covered and what you used for research sources such as website names, authors, books, interviews ect. You will be graded accordingly: 1. Your complete answers to the above 12 items/questions listed as a, b, c for each slide. (5 pts for each item = 60% of your grade) 2. Quality of your PowerPoint/Prezi in regards to photos, charts, easy to read, and creativity. This equals 20% of your grade. Types of Subcultures (First come - First Serve) let me know through email ASAP which one you want. If you do not know the group, google it to get an idea as to whether you would find it interesting. 1. Senior Citizens 2. Any part of LGBTQIA 3. Any part of the Disabled Community 4.
