Postanesthesia
A woman is directly admitted to the surgical ICU following thoracic surgery for the removal of a malignant tumor of the right upper lobe. She is intubated and changed over from the transport ventilator to the ICU ventilator by respiratory therapy. A right pleural chest tube is draining minimal amounts of blood, with no evidence of air leaks or obstructions.
The patient is unresponsive to verbal and pain stimulation on admission. No spontaneous respirations are noted on the ventilator respiratory waveform screen or by physical assessment.
