(~300 words)JJaila GarciaMar 25, 09.32 PMClassmate post: Ofelia Garcia's article had many important ideas being delivered throughout. Still, one of the primary purposes was the fact that certain people see learning a second language as an advantage to help their businesses. They didn't pay attention to the importance of it when discussing how it's a part of a person's life and culture. Many countries have tried hard to get rid of certain people's primary language but later figured out a way to make their language the primary one, not the one the people in the specific country originally had. It's like what Queen Victoria did to the people in New Zealand. Some countries that conquer new places "temporarily silence" the native people, and other times "they rob them from their voices." Conquest and colonialism is the reason why the English language has expanded to how it is now. One of the benefits of having a primary language is that most people want to learn. An example shown is when "wealthy Latin Americans wanting to do business with the United States will have a greater desire to learn English than Maori," proving the point that learning English has to do with the economy. Countries have tried to make sure people's original language disappears until they find a purpose for how it can be useful. To maintain other languages that are being spoken in the country, they change their name, from ethnic language to foreign language. There was a time they didn't want children to learn foreign languages at school until President Carter allowed them; the reason for that is because of economic benefits. People want to be able to communicate with someone else who doesn't speak their primary language and do business with them. People want to increase their profits and gain more; to do that, you have to branch out. Some countries have more than two languages like India who acknowledge 14, so if someone wants to trade or do business with India, there is a need for someone to know these languages. Not everyone knows the English language, during the time where countries were conquering many countries, it wasn't only Britain, France, Spain and Portugal also participated, and all those countries spoke different languages. People later figured out how important it is to communicate with other countries that aren't our own. Both countries can win from learning a new language. France, as in American, is making learning a foreign language a volunteer subject to take. They still think it's essential to learn a language, but they'll mainly focus on and encourage their primary communication. People can learn a second language from their parents, but they will mostly focus on the language their country deems as their primary focus. Like most things in life, people want to gain something when it involves helping/ maintain a specific type of thing. Many people wanted to kill the language that wasn't theirs; now, they're allowing it so that they can benefit from their learning experience. People in control usually agree or let something be taught or given if they see a way to gain money from it. Money tends to be the driving force from many decisions that affect the people that live in the area.
