POLC37H3 Critical Analysis Paper
Due: Dec 13th (by end of day, 11:59 PM EST via Turnitin)
Your task in the paper – the criteria you will be evaluated according to – are the following:

Instructions: Compose a 2000-2500 word research essay, roughly 8-10pgs double-spaced 12pt font following the parameters list below (infringement of the length requirements may result in
point deductions).
1) Demonstrate that you understand the concepts of the thinkers you are analyzing;
reconstruct the chain of reasoning at work when exploring concepts/arguments
2) Demonstrate the ability to analyze arguments/positions; establish a comparative analysis that clearly identifies why/how the thinkers differ/overlap in an
important/significant way on a similar theme/issue
3) Demonstrate the ability to build and defend a coherent and justifiable normative
evaluation of the competing/complementary perspectives
Note: you are not necessarily required to ‘take sides’ in the paper (i.e. using Benhabib to criticize Rawls), although you may do so. If you disagree (or agree) with elements of two positions, you should explain why. The most important task in the paper is to satisfy the three criteria listed above – understanding, analysis and defending your normative position/thesis. The paper topics/themes
are open-ended to allow you pursue a topic/theme that you find important/interesting.
You are encouraged (but not required) to submit a brief essay outline by email. You can
expect feedback in approximately 2-3 days.
Parameters for selecting research materials:
Your paper will need to substantively address THREE sources from the syllabus.
ONE source must be a primary source read in class
ONE source must be a supplementary source relevant to your topic (see the syllabus section: “Recommendations” for each week). Feel free to consult me about choosing a
relevant supplementary source for your paper
The Third source can be either a primary or supplementary source.

Evaluation: 35% of total grade. You will be evaluated on the quality of your argument (i.e. on the clarity of your thesis, and the strength and clarity of the arguments you develop to support it, following the three tasks listed above).
