Assessment 1: Annotated bibliography (Theory) An annotated bibliography provides an explanation of the best available research on a given research topic. The annotation usually contains a brief summary of content and a short analysis or evaluation of the research article. The goal of this assessment is to reflect, summarise, critique and evaluate research, about the research topic. Resources are available on LMS to assist with your preparation of this assessment. For the annotated bibliography, use five journal articles. Prepare an annotation of each article with the goal of informing the reader as to the content, relevance and quality of the research (about 200 words for each article). Focus Question - Explain how theories may be applied to the practice of leading and managing nonprofit organisations. Select one of the following theories to assist you in your approach 1. Resource Dependency Theory; or, 2. Stakeholder Theory; or, 3. Another theory…. Please note the following: • Word count 1,000 words. • Approximately 200 words per annotation • Number of academic journal articles – five (5) with no more than two (2) being older than 2014 • Assessment format – Times New Roman size 12 font; 1.5 line spacing • Do not attach a cover page but ensure your name and student number is on your assessment • Referencing format – APA 7th https://libguides.murdoch.edu.au/APA https://libguides.murdoch.edu.au/APA CHECKLIST – Annotated Bibliography (FOR USE BY STUDENTS) Content/Research Has the student identified important pieces of literature on the topic? Have a range of appropriate types of literature been consulted in accordance with the brief? Has the student outlined the key issues raised and discussed these? Has the theory been covered in appropriate depth and breadth for the size of the assessment? Has the student demonstrated an understanding of the current understanding of theory? Has the student demonstrated an understanding of the importance of the theory? Critical Analysis Has the student offered sufficient selected literature? Has the student critically analysed each of the selected articles? Are opposing or critical views identified and discussed? Does the contribution demonstrate understanding of how the concepts fit into the broader context of leading and managing nonprofit organisations? Does the contribution demonstrate understanding by the student of higher-level thinking, and linking to the theory? Presentation, format, grammar, spelling and referencing Has a good standard of spelling been maintained? Has a good standard of grammar been maintained? Has a consistent recognised referencing format been followed? Is the material presented in a well-organised and logical order? Is the language used appropriate? Has an appropriate contribution format been adopted? Please note: Marks will be deducted for Poor referencing Poor grammar and spelling Poor articulation of argument Insufficient reference to academic material Lack of recent references Insufficient focus on the theory and nonprofit organisations Late submission of work MBS651 Annotated Bibliography - Criteria for assessment Dimension Fail Pass Credit Distinction High Distinction Content/Research Does not include sufficient current and seminal references to address the topic. How to find the main points quickly in different kinds of texts Essay Topic: Poverty in the USA Example Annotation - structure Source Structure and Comments Cancian, M., Haveman, R., Meyer, D. R., & Wolfe, B. (2000). Before and after Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF): The economic well-being of women leaving welfare (Special Report No. 77). Madison, WI: Institute for Research on Poverty. Retrieved from http://www.irp.wisc.edu/publications/sr/pdfs/sr77.pdf Using data from before and after the implementation of TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), the study compares the well-being of those who left welfare under early Wisconsin reforms and those who left under the later more stringent TANF program. Earnings were lower in the second cohort, consistent with the hypothesis that the new welfare regime pushes people with fewer employment skills into the labor market where they accept lower- paying jobs, joining the ranks of the working poor. This study provides evidence that new antipoverty policies are not necessarily more effective than older ones and would be used in the final section of the essay evaluating the impacts of recent antipoverty policies. Although the data is useful, the evidence is limited to only one state, Wisconsin, and may not be true of other States in the US. Adapted from Examining the Structural Determinants of Poverty, an Annotated Bibliography (2013) American Psychological Association Committee on Socioeconomic Status Reference of source. Listed alphabetically in the bibliography according to the first letter of the first author. Summary of the main findings of the study comparing early and later TANF programs Main point: The latter program is worse than the earlier one. Can be used in the essay in the section ‘Evaluating new antipoverty policies’. Strengths and limitations of article: Applies to only one US State, Wisconsin, not necessarily to others. http://www.irp.wisc.edu/publications/sr/pdfs/sr77.pdf Structure of an annotation - activity (1) Trevor, C.O., Lansford, B. and Black, J.W., 2004, ‘Employee turnover and job performance: monitoring the influences of salary growth and promotion’, Journal of Armchair Psychology, vol 113, no.1, pp. 56-64. (2) In this article Trevor et al. review the influences of pay and job opportunities in respect to job performance, turnover rates and employee motivation.(3) The authors use data gained through organisational surveys of blue-chip companies in Vancouver, Canada to try to identify the main causes of employee turnover and whether it is linked to salary growth.(4) Their research focuses on assessing a range of pay structures such as pay for performance and organisational reward schemes.(5) The article is useful to my research topic, as Trevor et al. suggest that there are numerous reasons for employee turnover and variances in employee motivation and performance.(6) The main limitation of the article is that the survey sample was restricted to mid-level management,(7) thus the authors indicate that further, more extensive, research needs to be undertaken to develop a more in-depth understanding of employee turnover and job performance.(8) This article will not form the basis of my research; however it will be useful supplementary information for my research on pay structures. Heikkinen, A., Kujala, J., & Inha, M. (2019). Stakeholder engagement in a non-profit organisation
: an issue-based perspective. International Journal of Human Resources Development and Management, 19(1), 5-20
The aim (or purpose) of the research by Heikkinen et al. (2019) was to understand the engagement of stakeholder theory in the non-profit organisation. The research was conducted based on Mixed Methods. The researchers used a survey. The researchers used the methods of interviews. The participants for the survey were the chairpersons of national networks. The researchers used a sample. They identified 18 potential chairpersons of national networks. 15 chairpersons of the national network actually took part in the research. The findings state that the network groups play a pivotal role in stakeholder theory concerning the non-profitable organisations. The second findings state that it is the role of the stakeholders, which decide the decision-making power of the organisation. The stakeholders suggest that business ethics is the most important aspect in the organisation. Strengths of the research are that the findings are highly helpful to understand the implications of stakeholders’ theory over the workforce of the NPOs. The weaknesses of the research are that the study is limited to its generalisability. The researchers concluded that testimony highlights the stakeholder’s management and its importance over the workforce of the NPOs. It is certain that the article helps in answering the research question. The article has answered the importance stakeholder theory is applicable and implied in a NPO.
