Objective: The purpose of this exam is for you to explore a topic of your choice as a way of understanding the relationship between technology and society by applying the perspective of technological determinism. Essay-writing Procedure: 1. Choose a topic of your interest and genre (e.g., argumentative speech, personal reflection-style essay, blog or any other social media post, a letter to friend, family member, future employer, business partner or celebrity, etc.) by which you can demonstrate your in-depth understanding of the perspective of technological determinism. 2. When you select a topic, consider that your essay must have 4 direct or indirect citations out of 4 different sources we have covered so far. You have the six scholars (Innis, McLuhan, Postman, Turkle, Manovich, & Krasmann) and the three viewing materials (2 episodes form Black Mirror and the documentary of The Great Hack) as the candidates to cite from. One citation can include 1 to 3 sentences. You can have 6 citations from the class materials if needed. This requirement is to encourage you to engage the class materials more actively. 3. Think about what the core message (e.g., claim, lesson, suggestion, etc.) of your essay will be. You should be able to express your message in one sentence.
