Once a naughty boy now is a grown man who comprehends world better and finds meaning in life. Kevin Roger recounts to the narrative of his childhood. As a little youngster, he used to live joyfully with his father and his attendant, Tina Green. His mother passed away while giving birth to him. During Kevin’s youth, his father remarries the savage Ms Laura Anderson, who was a young girl in her late twenties. When she married Kevin’s dad she brought along her severe elder sister, Miss Janet Anderson, into the house. Janet was in her forties and a widow. She had a huge posture, grey hair and always had a grin on his face. The Andersons treated Kevin very badly literally like a savage and influenced his father to ignore him. Kevin and his relationship with his father become estranged and there are lot of difference that comes into picture. His father stops talking to him or giving him time. Kevin begin a small boy didn’t understand what was going on in his life and how these turns of events will leave a deep mark forever in his life. Once in a sunny Sunday morning, Kevin was playing with his ball in balcony with deep thoughts trying to comprehend the changed behaviour of his father. There wasn’t a day where he didn’t miss his mother being there with him. While he was deeply pondering about his life and family the ball slipped from his hand and accidently hit Laura, his stepmother. Although it was an accident but Laura made is sound like it was on purpose. Rushing came the elder sister, Janet who started accusing Kevin about how he wants this marriage to fail and thinks ill about his stepmother. With so much probe and heavy words coming out from Anderson’s mouth Kevin’s father started beating him and didn’t even bother to listen to his part of the story. Disgusted and frustrated Kevin kept on shouting that he didn’t do on purpose but nobody was there to listen his side. Little lad of ten year had face a lot of beating for something that was a pure accident. What saddened Kevin was that his own father didn’t listen to him. He didn’t even ask him what happened and straightaway jumped to conclusion. He realised that his father is a changed person. That evening he went to speak to father but to his dismay he found that people are conspiring to send him to boarding school away from home.
Tina steps in and tries to create a diversion from this boarding issue for Kevin. She takes Kevin along with her to visit her family in Texas, where Kevin meets Tina’s sibling, Elena, and his two embraced youngsters, Dawson and Harry. Tina’s family used to live in a vessel flipped around—a space they share with Mrs. Nora, the bereaved spouse of Tina’s sibling. After this visit, Kevin is sent to boarding school at Salem House.
