Please write a one-page-minimum description of what environmental factors may have killed the dinosaurs. You should use the papers and links above AND you should look for additional papers that 1) these papers have cited and 2) have cited Hull et al. (2020) or Chiarenza et al. (2020). To include in your description: do Hull et al. (2020) and Chiarenza et al. (2020) have similar findings? Can you find other papers that support different findings? If yes, please list them at the end of your description.

What killed the dinosaurs? Read: 1) Hull, P.M. et al. 2020. On impact and volcanism across the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary. Science 367: 266-272. https://science.sciencemag.org/content/367/6475/266 2) Chiarenza, A.A. et al. 2020. Asteroid impact, not volcanism, caused the end-Cretaceous dinosaur extinction. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 117: 17084-17093. https://www.pnas.org/content/117/29/17084 Reading Instructions: When reading scientific papers, there are ~4 questions you can ask yourself to form a summary of the paper: 1) What was the main question asked by the authors? Do the authors clearly state a hypothesis to be tested? 2) What kind of approach (materials and methods) did the authors use to answer that question (briefly describe the study)? Is the methodology appropriate for the research question? 3) What were the general findings? What evidence do the authors provide to support their view? Do the authors make valid interpretations of the data? 4) What is the significance and relevance of the article? Is the evidence sufficient for the conclusions? You can also ask: 5) Why do you think that this study was valuable (or not)? Do you believe that the authors have proved/supported their point? Is there anything you didn’t understand in the paper? What, if anything, might the authors have done to improve their work? What is the logical next step in their research? What questions would you address next? How could you extend the study? These two papers are quite technical and not easy to read. Read the abstracts and the introductions. Then find paragraphs in the discussion, conclusion, or throughout the papers that are easier to digest and read those. Even doing this, it will still be difficult to understand everything. That’s ok. Reading some other documents/summaries may help (feel free to look for more): Science Daily summary of Hull et al. (2020): https://www.sciencenews.org/article/asteroid-impact-volcanism-earth-dinosaurs-deccan-mass-extinction In-class discussion Wednesday September 2 2:55-3:45PM: Attendance preferred. During this time, we can discuss the papers as a group, talk about the findings, and make sure that everyone understands the material and the assignment. Due via ecampus by Sunday September 6th, 11:59PM: Please write a one-page-minimum description of what environmental factors may have killed the dinosaurs. How do you find papers cited by Hull et al. (2020) and Chiarenza et al. (2020)? Check the references/literature cited! How do you find papers that have cited Hull et al. (2020) and Chiarenza et al. (2020)? Try Web of Science (database that you can access through TAMU libraries) or Google Scholar. Need help? Ask! Optional listening: The podcast Radiolab has a show on what killed the dinosaurs. Here are a few links to explore. What killed the Dinosaurs?
Dinosaurs are a group of reptiles with different types more found in the clade Dinosa
uria. Though exact origin of time is not known, it is estimated by researchers that it originated 233 -234 millions years ago.
The dinosaurs became the dominant terrestrial vertebrates after the Triassic–Jurassic extinction event 201.3 million years ago; and enjoyed their dominance during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.
Dinosaurs can broadly be divided into avian dinosaurs, or birds; and non-avian dinosaurs, which are all dinosaurs other than birds. While avian dinosaurs still exist in types of birds, the other type became extinct.
.
We cannot see dinosaurs normally nowadays except in pictures and movies animated. Nearly 65 million years ago, these species were very much abundant. We find it difficult to believe that these species existed in large numbers in the ancient times.
Abundant fossil bones, teeth, trackways, and other hard evidence have confirmed the existence of dinosaurs as early as 230 million years ago. (nationalgeographic.com/science/pre historic world/dinosaur extinction by Victoria...
