PLEASE USE THE ATTACHED REFERENCE!! NO OUTSIDE SOURCES

This week we looked at two different aspects of "culture" related to work -- occupational culture and organizational culture. These refer to thevalues, norms, attitudes, and accepted procedures...in short, the ways of life that are part of one's type of work (occupational culture) and part of one's company or firm (organizational culture). These are not necessarily the technical parts of doing one's job or functioning as part of staff of employees within an organization, but they are every bit as important to getting along in one's job and workplace.

Make sure that you keep these two (2) facets of culture in mind as we reflect on these things in the discussion board this week! To quote Voltiin Chapter 8: "Socialization is the process through which individuals become part of a human society through the assimilation of the society’s dominant culture, and perhaps one or more significant subcultures."

Please respond to the following questions, keeping in mind the various dimensions of work culture we read about this week:

  1. What aspects of occupational OR organizational culture at your present job or a job or organization you aspire to enter do you accept and find it easy to adapt to? Explain. What aspects are you less comfortable with…or do you outright dislike?

  2. How did you come to understand that these aspects of either occupational culture or organizational culture existed in the type of work you do and/or in the company you work for? How did you become "socialized" and learn to adopt these practices, habits, ways of being, etc.?

  3. In your view and experience, what purpose does workplace culture serve? In what ways is it effective at serving that purpose? In what ways is it not effective?

1. I would definitely prefer to work in a company with organisation structure. The importance of a company's culture to its success or failure has been emphasised .I have seen a widespread interest in the issue of organisational cultures. a hierarchical system of some type, with a dominant "official" culture imposed by upper management and a number of other "unofficial" cultures associated with different departments or job functions. Cultures sanctioned by authorities tend to show themselves through explicit norms and company ethics, regulations, and uniform policies.
