Shanghai is a port city located near the mouth of Yangtze River, the main gateway to interior
China. During colonial period European build this city as modern business district. During
Communist rule (post 1949) this was the second most populated city in the world. However
the city started decaying because of the heavy taxes .Since 1980, the city started reviving
because migrants from all over China started flocking in. The new Shanghai is a city of high
rise apartment and concentrated industrial development. Now it is the second busiest port in
the world and has the world’s fastest train. That’s why it has emerged as the most populous
urban areas in China.

Japan owes its lush forest both to its mild rainy climate and long history of forest
conservation. For hundreds of years both the Japanese and village community have enforced
strict forest conservation rules. However, in China many of the upland regions support only
grass, meagre scrub and stunted trees. China lacks the historical tradition of forest

Japan is highly urbanised country supporting two of the world’s largest agglomerations.
Japanese settlement is 15% of its land areas . The main industrial belt which extends from
Tokyo through Nagoya and Osaka to Kyushu is the most intensively used part of the world
for human habitation, industry and agriculture. Due to such space limitations all the Japanese
cities are characterized by dense settlement patterns i.e. living space is highly restricted
.According to Americans Japanese cities should expand to nearby rural areas. However, such
expansion is only possible at the expense of farmland because most upland is too steep for
residential purposes. Conversion of farmland into neighbourhood is also not possible because
farms are too small. Moreover farmers are politically very powerful and the croplands are
protected by the tax code. Japanese also believes that their country should remain self
sufficient in rice despite the fact that Japanese relies on import for half of the food need and
energy that is required to grow rice.
