53 GEOG 3810 Assignment #5 1 CLAYTON H. RIDDELL FACULTY OF EARTH, ENVIRONMENT, AND RESOURCES DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT AND GEOGRAPHY GEOG 3810 QUANTIATIVE RESEARCH METHODS IN GEOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT #5: THREE (+) SAMPLE AND CATEGORICAL TESTING DUE DATE: APRIL 6, 2021 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize students with the procedure and interpretation of three or more-sample hypothesis testing, as well as categorical hypothesis testing. This will be accomplished by using data and Excel to run the analysis, and the student will be expected to interpret the output. NOTE: the quality of your presentation (neatness, spelling, grammar, etc.) is an important component of your grade for this assignment. Make sure to provide answers in complete answers; failure to use complete sentences will result in a grade of 0 for that question. ASSIGNMENT Section I: Three or More Sample Hypothesis Testing Using the ‘World Country-Level Data Set’ available in UMLearn, I would like you to compare the Per Capita GNP between Asian, Africa and Latin America. For this part of the assignment, make sure to use all of the countries listed under those continents (do not use one of the samples – A through D). Research Question: Is there a significant difference in GNP between continents. Conduct both an analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Kruskal-Wallis test to determine whether differences exist in the Per Capita GNP for the three continents. In order to complete these tests, you should have the Per Capital GNP for each continent in a separate column (one for Asian countries, another for African countries and a third column with Latin American countries). The name of the countries is not necessary for this assignment. Open Excel and use the Real Statistics package that you installed in assignment 2. The following dialog box should appear. GEOG 3810 Assignment #5 2 Click on the ‘ANOVA’ tab on the top far right and the following should appear. Select ‘One Factor Anova’ and click OK. A new box will appear. GEOG 3810 Assignment #5 3 You can run both an ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test at the same time. To run these test, you must first input the location of the data into the Input Range box. Next, under Omnibus test options, select both ‘Anova’ and ‘Kruskal-Wallis’. Finally, enter the cell you would like the output to be placed in the Output Range at the bottom of the box. You do not have to change anything else in this screen. Click OK and the hypothesis test output should appear in Excel. Question 1: Summarize and discuss the results from the ANOVA test. In your answer, i. state your null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis (1 mark) ii. specify your significance level and critical statistic (you will need to get this value from a table) (1 mark) iii. include the test results from Excel (1 marks) iv. state whether the null hypothesis should be rejected or accepted based on p-value and t statistic and explain why (3 marks). Make sure to state the p-value and test statistic in your answer. v. finally what is your answer regarding the research question (1 mark) Question 2: Summarize and discuss the results from the Kruskal-Wallis test. Make sure to state the p-value and test statistic in your answer. v. what is your answer regarding the research question (1 mark) vi. was the conclusion the same for the parametric and non-parametric test (1 mark). Why or why not? (1 mark) Question 3: Briefly discuss any procedural difficulties, data problems or limitations associated with this research study. (3 marks) GEOG 3810 Assignment #5 4 Section II: Goodness of Fit Test The City of Winnipeg is interested in knowing if the nationality of foreign tourists is related to which tourist attraction they liked most. Using proper sampling procedures, the following visitation data for each attraction have been collected and are presented below: Attraction Asian Filipino Italian The Forks 29 14 17 Canadian Museum for Human Rights 11 24 13 Assiniboine Park 3 18 9 Royal Canadian Mint 14 10 15 Research Question: The municipal government assumes that the number of tourists from the various countries visiting tourist attractions in Winnipeg is uniform. Complete this question using the critical value method discussed in class (you will not be using Real Statistics to find the answer). You can use Excel to do the calculations. Question 4: Which hypothesis test would you use to investigate the problem? Justify your answer. (2 marks) Question 5: Summarize and discuss the results from the test. In your answer, i. state your null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis (1 marks) ii. specify your significance level (1 mark) iii. provide a table with the expected values for each attraction (2 mark) iv. provide the calculations you performed (2 marks). This must not be hand-written. v. state whether the null hypothesis should be rejected or accepted based on critical and test statistic and explain why (2 marks) vi. finally conclude regarding the research question (1 marks) Question 6: What would you advise the City of Winnipeg? Why? (2 marks)
