Complete the following textbook exercises:
2, 8, and 18
2. A sample of 65 observations is selected from one po
pulation with a population standard deviation of 0.75. The sample mean is 2.67. A sample of 50 observations is selected from a second population with a population standard deviation of 0.66. The sample mean is 2.59. Conduct the following test of hypothesis using the .08 significance level.
H0 :

m
1 - 2

£

H1 :

m

m
2 > 0
a. Is this a one-tailed or two-tailed test?
b. State the decision rule.
c. Compute the value of the test statistic.
d. What is your decision regarding H0?
e. What is the p-value? Interpret the p-value.
Answer:
a. It is a one-tailed test.
b. Using Z-tables the critical value is
Z (0.08) = 1.405
Decision rule – If Z-statistics > 1.405, null hypothesis is rejected.
c. Test Statistics
Z = (M1 – M2)/√σ1²/n1 + σ2²/n2
= (2.67 – 2.59)/√0.75²/65 + 0.66²/50
= 0.61
d. Since test statistics is less than the critical value, we fail to reject the null hypothesis.
e. Using Z-tables, the probability is
P [Z > 0.61] = 1 – 0.729 = 0.271
As...
