Biography
The contribution of Maria Montessori to early childhood education and society is undeniable. She was born on August 31st, 1870 in a town called Chiaravalle, Italy. She
was born to a highly educated family, where her father, Alessandro, worked as an accountant in the civil service while her mother Renilde Stoppani was extremely well-read and shared a passion for reading. Maria wanted to destroy the conventional barrier of gender; therefore, she wanted to pursue male-dominated fields, such as engineering and medicine. After graduating from secondary school, she was determined to take up medicine as her field of education. Although she was initially refused from entering into the medical school, with the recommendation of Pope LeoXIII, she was allowed in the University of Rome in 1890. Maria was one of the first female students of the Italian medical school. After extreme hardship relating to her gender identity, she became a doctor in July 1896 (Montessori Australia).
Maria took responsibility for several mentally disabled children who were initially considered uneducable. Under her guidance for two years, the same children took examinations along with numerous 'normal' children and passed with flying colors. As a result of this, according to the scholar Romano Maria Montessori has been called a miracle worker by several different educators. Her engagements with a variety of different research work instilled in her a deep interest in the needs of children with various kinds of learning disabilities. According to Bone, Maria became the harbinger of social reforms in terms of gender roles and advocacy for the children. The approach propagated by Maria known as the Montessori Method gradually gained prominence in America, UK as well as throughout Europe. However, the rise of Fascism hindered the Montessori movement to a great extent. Although Maria remained unmarried throughout her life, she had a son Mario with her colleague Dr. Giusseppe Montesano. Maria passed away at the age of 81 years on May 6th, 1952 in the Netherlands. Her rich legacy has been carried forward by her son Mario who took initiative in spreading her welfare works.
The reason behind Her Renown
Maria Montessori after completing her education in medical school became completely involved in the Women's Right Movement. She proved to be highly competent in treating different kinds of patients. However, according to Gunderman, one of the most strikingly attractive qualities about Maria was her nature of respecting every patient disregarding their social standing in society. Following that, in the year 1897, she joined a research program as a volunteer for the psychiatric department of the University of Rome. It is during this time that her deep interest in the education of children got instilled in her. In this period, Maria successfully worked with a group of mentally disabled young children and received more knowledge about children's education and their learning capabilities. Later, at the age of 28 years, Maria shouldered the responsibility of advocating for the needs of young disabled learners. She openly spoke about the lack of support regarding the education of mentally and developmentally disabled children were due to absolute neglect.
In the year 1901, Maria once again started self-educating herself by studying subjects such as educational philosophy and anthropology. She also simultaneously taught and lectured students during this period. After the completion of her course of education, she opened the first Children’s House or Casa dei Bambini in 1907. Maria developed her lectures and lessons based on the knowledge she had gained earlier along with some educational materials that she brought from her previous organization, namely, Orthophrenic School. In the new school, she surrounded the children with an environment in which the activities helped them engage with their natural development, thereby, helping them to educate themselves better. The notes from this period helped her in publishing her first book in 1912, called The Montessori Method, which was later translated into twenty languages. Another of her approach...
