The medical team has decided that he is a good candidate for a clinical trial using stem cell therapy. Your friend has not had a biology course since high school, so you decide to write him a letter sharing your knowledge of stem cells. Include in your letter a description of the biology of stem cells and how these cells are unique from other cells. Contrast the different types of stem cells, including pros and cons for each type. Explain how stems cells can be used to treat diseases and injury, with special focus on spinal cord injuries. Include information from at least one research study or clinical trial. Conclude with your own opinion.  b) Genetically modified organisms (GMOs). A friend tells you that she avoids foods containing GMOs because they are unhealthy. You decide to use the knowledge gained from your biology class and some additional research to form your own opinion on GMOs. Answer the following questions backed up by reliable information sources. Because you have studied biology in this course, you have volunteered at your niece’s Middle School Science Club to monitor a student debate about CRISPR. Start with an explanation of how vaccines work. Briefly contrast the traditional methods used to create vaccines with more recently used biotechnology techniques. Then list some of the diseases that babies and children in the US are routinely vaccinated against. How has vaccinations impacted the frequency of these diseases over the past 100 years? Why are some people worried about giving their children vaccines? Is there scientific evidence to support these concerns? Conclude with advice to your friend in regard to getting the recommended vaccines based on what you learned from reliable information sources.  e) Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) and tar sands (oil sands).  With society's dependence on nonrenewable fossil fuels, the oil & gas industry is turning to hydraulic fracturing and tar (oil) sands to extract natural gas and oil.  A friend asks you "What's all this controversy in the news about fracking and tar sands?"  Briefly explain to your friend how hydraulic fracturing and tar (oil) sands are used to obtain these fossil fuels. Then, in more detail, describe the environmental problems that may result from these processes and why they are controversial. Issues that should be addressed involves water, air and soil pollution with special focus on global climate change, effects on human health, and effects on other species and natural ecosystems. Genetically Engineering Crop Plants- Purpose
Genetic modification and the introduction of a new trait into the crops is performed to achieve effective resistance to a variety of harmful pests and diseases that adversely affect the crop and its cultivation. Also,
resistance to chemical treatments from pesticides and herbicides that compromise the nutritional content of the crop along with the strenuous environmental conditions that offer challenges for the cultivation of basic crops in these places leading to scarcity of food in that area have been the key reasons for the discovery and production of artificially engineered crops. There is a constant requirement to match the increased rate of global food demands which can only be achieved if there is a significant increase in the production rate of staple crops such as grains and pulses.
Genetic engineering and production of GMOs in the field of agriculture is important due to the following factors:
i. To achieve increased crop yields to meet the demand to the ever-increasing population.
ii. To reduce the need for herbicides and pesticides
iii. To sufficiently improve the nutrient content and food quality
iv. To incorporate effective resistance to harmful pests and diseases
v. To reduce the costs incurred in food or drug production especially in the developing countries and
vi. To achieve better food security
Over the past couple of years, major advancements in the field of genetic engineering have led to the production of crop plants that have the ability to mature at an increased rate as well as tolerate environmental stressors in the soil such as boron, aluminium and salt. Tolerance to adverse climate conditions such as drought and frost in these crops has enabled farmers to cultivate them in areas where the cultivation process was earlier believed to be very difficult.
Two examples of commonly grown GMO crops:
1. Alfalfa: Alfalfa is an extremely nutritious leguminous plant that contains a good amount of vitamins B, C, D, and E that are essential for the human body. Its consumption is believed to benefit patients with ailments of the kidney and prostate by helping them manage their blood sugar levels as the fibrous plant minimizes the rate of absorption of glucose by the intestines. In farming, alfalfa is mainly used as animal feed for cows, sheep, beef cattle, chickens, horses etc. Alfalfa also functions as an energy-competent supply of biological nitrogen fixation.
The genetically modified alfalfa was produced by introducing a gene coding for glyphosate insensitive form of 5-enolpyruvylshikimate 3-phosphate enzyme acquired from the Agrobacterium species through transgenic technology which produces CP4 EPSP Synthase as the gene product thus conferring resistance to the glyphosate-based herbicide called Roundup. Thus, farmers can spray the herbicide on these crops to eliminate the infestation by weeds without harming the crop.
2. Canola: Canola belongs to the Brassica family of plants producing pods containing seeds that are harvested and crushed further to produce Canola oil. This oil is believed to be beneficial for the heart as it contains 7% of saturated fat along with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids thus helping in effective cholesterol management.
