Different countries of the world have their own different cultures that are unique
from one another. It becomes often difficult for an individual belonging to one culture to
adapt properly to the culture of someone else’s. Such problems are often faced by
immigrants in a country who are forced to adapt to a foreign culture that has some
distinct characteristics that are again different from the indigenous culture of the
concerned individual. In the United States of America myriads of individuals from
different countries across the globe migrates and these immigrants experience different
social and cultural aspects that sometime enrich their own cultural ideologies or
sometime makes them feel obscured and uncertain. And in this respect I had always
desired to get to know about some primary differences which the immigrants experience
while dwelling in the United States, a country which has always been an abode of
cultural diversity and unprecedented uniqueness that have been rendered by the
infusion and amalgamation of different cultures within a single society.
Recently I came across a Mexican American who in the 2010 got the American
citizenship. I got acquainted with him through one of my friends who has a professional
relation with the man. My friend was aware of the fact that I had a longing to meet with
a person from different cultural background and interview him/her for knowing the
aspects and characteristics of the concerned culture in a better manner. He got me
introduced to this man named Abelardo Alvarez. Mr. Alvarez is an established painter
and I think it was due to his world renowned fame and innumerable works of fusion of
the Mexican- American culture that it became easy for his to secure the American
citizenship. But about the citizenship process I was disillusioned when Mr. Alvarez
detailed me how he had been physically present in the United States since 2006 as a

lawful resident in the state of Louisiana and how he had to struggle to get his citizenship
application approved by the U.S. administration.
A very amicable person, Mr. Alvarez welcomed me in a warm manner in his
house and he made me feel at ease. I was amazed that how such an eminent and world
renowned artist can be so down-to-earth! I was soon to learn that it was something in
the indigenous Mexican culture which made this man so successful yet so modest. On
questioning that how life had been in the United States and how it was in Mexico, Mr.
Alvarez conveyed to me a sort of socio-cultural account as experienced by a Mexican in
his native country. He started with his experience as a little boy in a family which there
was love and joy. He spoke that in Mexico it is always family first and profession comes
