Joe Freeman – Discussion 1 My workplace ethics can be defined with this phrase, “Integrity First, Service before Self, and Excellence in all that we do”. For these are the core values that I have lived by for over 20 years of Air Force service. To me integrity means doing what’s right even when no one is looking, service before self means putting the needs of the company over my own personal needs, and excellence in all that I do means always striving for greatness. . “Businesses with strong workplace ethics add value to the organization and support an environment where employees feel safe and valued” (as citied in “Managing Ethics”, 2017). The Air Force’s long history of protecting this country and producing great citizens have shown this to be true. My history of service includes law enforcement in New Jersey. Next I worked as an enlisted accessions recruiter in Memphis Tennessee. I then worked recruiting operations in South Carolina, I did officer recruiting in Oklahoma, and finally I worked staffing in San Antonio Texas. Currently, I’m in charge of training, marketing, and advertising for all of Air Force recruiting for the states of Washington, Oregon, and Alaska. Which means I formulate and implement advertising policy. I monitor and conduct training for newly assigned personnel and manage our 3 million dollars’ worth of assets and funds. To speak a little on my OWEI it graded my interpersonal score as a 7 out of 7. I believe that matches up with the recruiting background and my natural ability to bond and connect with people. Having strong interpersonal skills is required to work in recruiting because our success or failure depends on how well you can connect with people and get them to see how the Air Force can benefit them, if you come across the wrong way you can lose people and not have a very successful career. My initiative score is a 6.75 out of 7 and I believe that ties into the marketing and advertising part of my job. I’m constantly looking for new ways to attract clients and potential recruits. Two years ago I decided to repurpose about 30% of our marketing budget into digital advertising which resulted in a 25% increase in online leads and a 15% increase in overall production. My dependability total is 6.86 out of 7 and I believe that comes from the training aspect of my job along with the position. Once you make it to a certain point in a military career when you earn the title senior non-commissioned officer, then dependability is no longer an option, it’s expected. I can honestly say that there wasn’t much new information learned in this inventory only because as part of our regular training these type of surveys are done every 6 months or so. It is still always great information to have for those that have never taken it. References Managing Ethics in the Workplace (2017, April 4). The outcome of the assessment confirmed my belief: I possess the essential work ethics that will facilitate my ability to be fruitful in my career. An article by Penny Loretto (2015) states that the top ten work values employers look for are: strong work ethic, dependability and responsibility, positive attitude, adaptability, honesty and integrity, self-motivation, motivation to grow and learn, strong self-confidence, professionalism, and loyalty. I can honestly attest that I possess all the previously mentioned work ethics. I understand the correlation between employees’ work ethics and the success of a company; therefore, I constantly strive to sharpen my skills and abilities. I am adept at recognizing and prioritizing tasks to ensure vital tasks are completed prior to tasks of little or no significance, which prevents burnout. Predominantly, I am a leader who accepts accountability. I am committed to promoting the overall success of a company, I know how to inspire and encourage employees, and I am an effective communicator. References Loretto, P. (2015, April 24).
