Health care
Introduction - Definition and importance
Evidence based approach in the field of healthcare practice refers to the usage of
practices that are practical and are based on quantitative research (Mercer, J., & Pignotti, M.,
2007). This approach is based on the fact that numerical or quantitative analysis is stronger
than qualitative analysis and also is free from bias (Khan, K.S., et al, 2001). It does state that all
decisions should be made on research studies and should be interpreted based on some
specific norms. Only then best practices can be used and standardization is also possible. A
narrow set of criteria are used to analyze the quantitative data (Buysse, V., & Wesley, P.W,
2006).
The evidence based approach is of great importance in the field of health care practice.
The main reason for this is that in case of the field of medicine, as tried and tested practices are
the safest (Kaufman Best Practices Project, 2004). Using unauthenticated methods can at times
prove to be fatal as well. In case of medicine, it is also important to base or rationalize the usage
of a method on norms like effectiveness, safe to use and also approved by medical laws,
institution and standards of practice (Peile, E., 2004).
The usage of evidence approach helps ensure that there be appropriate decision making
in the field of medicine. It helps promote decisions in health care that can help integrate best
practices, best available evidence, expertise of many practitioners and resources from multiple
sources (Project MATCH Research Group, 1997). In this way it becomes possible to improve
and enhance the quality of medical practices globally through the usage of evidence based
practice in medical care. It helps ensure that there be appropriate medication methods and
nursing methods used in hospitals (Cochrane, A., 1972).
Broad research methods (qualitative and quantitative research)
Broad research methods include qualitative and quantitative research methods
(Saunders, B., Berliner, L., & Hanson, R., 2004). Qualitative research methods are focused on
the creation of analysis and logical deductions. It helps through methods like literature review
and helps analyze various sources, studies, theories and concepts (Mercer, J., & pignotti, M.,
2007). Yet evidence based approach does not significantly rely on qualitative research. But it
cannot be disregarded as the qualitative approach helps identify the significant factors and
norms based on which the quantitative analysis is done. It helps understands concepts and so...
