Important Due dates: Proof of reading 1,2 Midterm exam Research Paper Final exam GRADING SCHEME AND RATIONALE FOR ASSIGNING FINAL GRADE Ten (10) Assignments @ 10 points each 100 A = 359-400 points Two (2) Exams (Mid-Term and Final) @ 100 points each 200 B= 319-358 points (1) Research Paper +Proof of reading @ 100 point 50 +50 =100 C = 279-318 points Total Points 400 points D=237-317 F = 00-238 points 4 Guidelines for Research Essay: Your research paper includes two sections: first, the "Proof of Reading": The "Proof of Reading" will utilize the pdf format of sections of one book or article. Look at the calendar for due dates of the proof of reading assignment, which is your "proof" displaying that you read the (5) assigned pages of the book. This may include highlighted sections, notes in the margins, and a summary of the given section so I can tell that you are comprehending the material and are on task. I will email you the .pdf of the book with pages assigned to your name. Print those 4-5 pages or save them to your laptop. Then, read the first two pages. I called this easy reading action “Proof of reading 1 & 2," which is worth 50 points total. The second step is the final draft of your Research Paper. This will be a word document typed in MLA format and will contain a comprehensive reflection of the text utilizing your "Proof of Reading" notes, including proper citations and formatting by the due date: 50 points. Paper should be 400 words with included highlighted sections, notes in the margins, and a summary of the given section with direct quotes or quotation—the exact words taken from an original source and used in a second piece of writing, and an indirect quote or quotation—. You are required to write 400 words for your research paper. After incorporating direct and/or indirect quotes, you may only have 220 words of your own to produce, which is a little under double of the length of a Tweet. I believe in you! You can do this. Guidelines for Research Essay: 1. Use a combination of summary and analysis from your article’s pages (mostly Summarizing from reading pages). 2. Please do not write about your thoughts. For example, do not use “I think,” or “in my opinion.” 3. You must cite at least eight to ten quotes from the selected pages of the article/book, at your discretion, to support your reading using direct quotes or paraphrasing. This MUST be in MLA format with the author’s name and page number in each in-text quote. 4. A cover for Research paper is required and it should include title of book/article, the author’s name, selected page numbers, and your name. This will not be included in your word count. 5 5. In your final paragraph, you can state what you thought about what you read. 6. Your paper must be accurately double spaced, typed in 12-point Times New Roman font with one-inch margins on all sides, and should include page numbers (MLA format). 7. Your research paper should reflect the standard MLA header which includes your name, date, the course, and section number on the top left corner. Basically, I am evaluating you upon your reading skills, your summation, and use of proper citation. Do not worry about connecting your assigned pages to what you've learned throughout the entire semester. Just focus on the selected pages and summarize them.
