Please let me know if you can do the following: Case study 2:
Mary is a 20 year old cyclist who rides 150-200 miles a week. She is 5’6” weighing 120 lbs. Mary is a Type I Diabetic. She has an insulin pump that provides insulin when needed based on her activity level and dietary intake.
What type of athlete is Mary?
What energy systems are being utilized during this type of training?
Determine his total energy needs using the REE equations list given in your notes.
Determine his total carbohydrate needs using 6-7 grams per kilogram body weight
· Calculate number of calories from carbohydrates
· Determine the percentage of carbohydrates form total calories
Determine protein needs based on grams of protein per kilogram of body weight using 1.2-1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight
· Calculate the number of calories in grams from protein
· Determine the percentage of protein form total calories
Determine fat needs as a percentage of total calories:
· Calculate using the highest calorie range (highest percentage from carbohydrate and protein)
· Calculate grams of fat per day using 9calories/g
Based on your results and the type of athlete Mary is, provide sample food choices for a pre meal, during training meal/snack and post meal. It is important to stay within Mary’s daily calorie need to maintain her weight.
Mary gets hypoglycemic on her heavy training days. What are the signs and symptoms of this condition? What should Mary do to prevent this from happening?
Identify the important of each macronutrient for this athlete and if and when these macronutrients are being utilized.
Identify what vitamins and minerals are most needed for this type of athlete and why? Provide examples of food choices for Mary to consume that will provide her with the important vitamins and/or minerals.
Why are fluids critical for this athlete? What advice can you give to improve Mary’s performance?
Are supplements necessary, why or why not? If she chooses to take supplements, what advice can you provide her to help be better informed?
