Details: - While national culture is composed of sub-cultures it is recommended that you focus on national cultures for this assessment. - As a basis for your comparison, you should familiarise yourself with different cultural frameworks such as Ferraro’s cultural universals, Trompennar’s cultural value dimensions, Hofstede’s cultural framework, and GLOBE project. - Clearly define the cultural dimension/s of the cultural framework/s that you are going to apply to compare and contrast these two cultures. - Identify subtle differences between these two cultures (artefacts, values, beliefs and basic assumptions). - Discuss any similarity between your own culture of origin and the other culture of your choice in terms of artefacts, values, beliefs and basic assumptions. - Critically analyse the implications of these cultural values, beliefs and basic assumptions on business environment in countries of those cultures as well as dealing with people from those cultures in any workplace. - Support your arguments with appropriate references from scholarly sources. Cultural implications on Business- Thailand and Australia, a comparison
People inherit a lot of things from society beside traits. These include beliefs, customs, traditions, religion and so on. In a word, this could be termed as the culture of that society. In this
essay, we will be comparing the Thailand culture and Australian culture to understand the cultural implications of the two on businesses. In comparing these two, we shall look at the artefacts, values, beliefs and basic assumptions of the two cultures. These will be analysed with Ferraro’s cultural universals. We shall then discuss the implications of these differences in relation to business in these countries.
Thailand Cultural Background
Thailand is situated in Southeast Asia and is also known as the Kingdom of Thailand. The country is divided into four large regions with 76 provinces. It comprises of people from ancient Thai, Chinese and Indian geographies forming a part of its vibrant culture. Due to the friendly topography that it enjoys along with the friendly nature of its people, it is often referred to as “Land of Thousand Smiles” (Chittithaworn, Islam, Keawchana, and Yusuf, 2011).
Australian Cultural Background
Australia is a country located in Oceania and is termed as Commonwealth of Australia. It has a dominantly Western culture that is derived from Britain. It is also influenced by the culture of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The culture has been influenced by the World Wars as well as the constitutions, federalism and constitutionalism with Christianity dominating the cultural perception of the country (Ashkanasy, Trevor-Roberts, and Kennedy, 2000).
Ferraro’s cultural universals
Ferraro discussed how all cultures face some common problems and feature shared common features. These include, economic systems, marriage and family systems, education systems, social control systems and supernatural belief systems (Ferraro and Andreatta, 2014). When it comes to Thailand, the social structure majorly comprises of extended families living together or close by, sharing food and necessities. The younger individuals are expected to respect the elders. Marriage is considered a sacred duty and a religious event. Weddings are presided by monks. With regards to religion, Thailand is largely Buddhist. Religious leaders are revered and respected and supported by the government. The belief in supernatural is a part of the culture, with people creating miniature houses outside for spirits.
