11Information technology applications are quite versatile and do possess large scope of applicability in the retail industry sector. Tesco has experienced considerable increase in the revenues and expansion after embracing IT into its main stream operations. Similar benefits and even more advantages are possible for any industry if embraces Information technology as part of its operations. The report also detailed the basic concepts of the Information technology in terms of differences between Internet and Intranet, different types of internet, software development life cycles etc. All these differences are discussed in detail and the knowledge of the same will provide the necessary basis and framework for selection and design of IT systems for any industry in general. SDLC phases are quite significant in obtaining a final operating software system, effective execution of each of these phases will provide a more customized and optimized application for any application.

Information technology has occupied an indispensable role in today’s industry domain in general. Almost all type of industries have embraced the applications of the information technology in one way or other in their main stream operations. Information technology contributed to improve the organizational performance by constraining the time it occupies for regular operations, reducing the effort it is required for the organizational operations as well the resources needed for the organizational operations will be reduced as well. Information technology has become necessary not only for gaining competitive advantage for the organization, infact sustenance of the organizational functionalities now depends mandatorily on embracing the IT for their operational functionalities. The following part of the write-up is about the Tesco Plc the retail giant of the UK and the advantages the company gained by deploying the IT for its main stream operational requirements. Further there is also discussion about networking technologies in general applicable in the organizations. Also there is discussion about internet and intranet applications differentiation.
2.0 Literature review
IT is said to have several beneficial implications to the Retail industry in general. IT said to have optimized the routing problems for inventory in several complex scenarios by Peres et al (2017), in their investigative case studies. Gregory(2015) indicated that there is much to do with the retail industry applications for the internet applications. Internet with integrated IOT applications has changed the profile of the operations of the retail industry (Gregory 2015). (Kumari et al 2015,P.155)) indicated that the supply chain management applications have drastically improved with the interventions enabled by IT. RFID enabled inventory management is now possible with IT and it has contributed to the overall improvement of the organizational performance.
2.1 What IT can help the business to achieve
· Simply speaking the domains of application of the IT for business are very broad; there are several ways in which IT can help the organization to sustain in general. IT can work on to improve the overall operational efficiency of the organizations in general and for retail business operations in specific in the current context. The time it will consume for each of the business essential routines like inventory management, supply chain management, sales, sorting and check out of the employees can be greatly reduced using IT systems. Also it is possible to improve the Employee recruitment strategies in the organizations using IT systems (Laudon & Laudon 2016).
· IT simply can work on to let more customer outreach. Those customers who want to have the selling experience sitting in their homes can get the same using the IT applications. It is possible for employees to have better ease in running the business. The time it takes for checkout the time it will take up for taking the orders, processing the orders will be reduced drastically.
· Customers now can get better customer satisfaction using the IT applications in general. They do feel that they are getting more value for the money they do invest for their purchases.
· Organizational management can employ IT for the sake of obtaining data analytics and these data analytics can provide strategic inputs for the business operations and for doing their future business planning. Competitive sustenance and excelling in business operations can be enabled with IT more comfortably for the organizations.
2.2 Different type of networking technologies
There are different types of networking technologies being employed at present in the organizations. These networking technologies are of several types viz.,
Personal area networks (PAN) – The most basic and the smallest of all the type of networks. It is made up of the wireless modem and a computer with an attached phone, printers and the tablets. Normally they are meant of small businesses or single person operated set-ups in the offices or in the residential applications.
Local Area networks (LAN) – Local area networks refer the networking set-ups employed for a group of persons in general. They do work for connecting the group of computers and the low voltage devices across small distances in a local region. Enterprises typically use LAN for all their regional operational integration. Routers will be employed to connect LAN to WAN (wide area networks). They can facilitate rapid sharing of information in general.
Wireless Local Area networks (WLAN) – Wireless local area networks are same like local area networks however they do not need anytype of the physical cables for connecting different type of the devices in the system and hence offers more flexibility...
