In the modern times, classroom behaviour problems are a major source of burnout and stress for experienced teachers, new teachers and the affected students. The negative change in the behaviour of students adversely affects the quality of teaching in class and the mental health of the child affected. A number of policies have been framed to avoid such changes in behaviour by the regulatory authorities.
The teachers have become more active in dealing with such issues. This essay deals with such challenging behaviour of students along with reason behind such change. There is a requirement of an immediate change in the negative behaviour of students to bring about equality and mental freedom. There are existing law regarding these issues, but increase in awareness is required.
1. Specific Concerns for Teachers for Disruptive Behaviour of Students
Steps are being taken by various authorities to improve the quality of education in school and colleges. According to Papier, Ahmed, Lee and Wiseman (2015), few specific concerns for teachers include disruptive behaviour of students, which adds to the stress for teachers and negatively affects the quality of learnings at such organisations. Such challenging behaviour includes bullying, cyber-crime and discrimination. Teachers try to control the students from involving in such activities.
However, the efforts seem to be less effective. There is a negative effect in the classroom environment and the students who are affected by such. The affected students tend from suffer from mental health issues, which is an area of concern for the teachers. There is a negative impact on the learning ability of the affected students, which requires the teachers to put in extra efforts for teaching the students. As noted by Thomas, Connor and Scott (2015), use of technology for bullying is another area of concern for the teachers as any news of social media spreads like fire.
Before the teachers are able to have an idea of the situation, the information reaches every student and the society. In case of bullying on social media, the major area of concern is that the same is not limited to the classroom, but the effect can be seen beyond classroom. The affected students tend to suffer from mental stress, which hampers the learning environment in the classroom. In addition to that, the major area of concern for the teachers is the additional workload due to managing such situations at workplace. There is an impact on the mind-set of the teachers as they are engaged in managing such issues and are unable to impart proper knowledge to the students.
2. Possible Motivation Factors leading to Disruptive Behaviour in Students
One of the possible motivating factors behind children behaving disruptively includes bullying at school, which might be for seeking attention. As commented by Baldry, Farrington and Sorrentino (2017), students believe that if they bully other students, they seem to overpower others and are able to seek attention of others. One of the most common behind a student bullying others is the lack of attention at home. As students do not get proper attention at home, they tend to seek attention of others at school. They believe that they seem to be superior over other students if they bully others.
Those students who have been bullied in the past seem to bully other students at school. They feel a sense of relief by bullying others as they may have bullied in prior times. As stated by Zych, Ortega-Ruiz and Del Rey (2015), hanging out of the crowd is also one motivating factor behind bullying others. They feel that they will be valued in the crowd of they disrespect others and will be able to portray themselves as cool or different from others. Support by other students is an instigating factor behind bullying in many cases. Those students who bully others are supported by other students rather than being criticised.
This makes them feel that they have the support of other students and the bullied student will not be able to raise his voice against him. It has also been seem that, in order to escape from being bullied by others, few students tend to bully other students. As commented by Meyer (2015), when there is a scenario of bullying and discrimination, students tend to follow such behaviour and this instigates them to bully others. Few students carve for attention and power. Therefore, they believe that if they bully others and practice discrimination, they will be able to grab the attention of the public. Discrimination is something that a child starts learning from childhood. Therefore, past experiences of the child also leads to discrimination regarding colour, sex, caste and other criteria.
Intelligent students bully weak students, as they believe they have knowledge and good grades, due to which they will not be scolded by the teachers. According to Betts, Gkimitzoudis, Spenser and Baguley (2017), if the teachers favour certain students in their wrong action, it motivates them to continue bully others. In case of cyber-bullying, it has been observed that majority of the children involved in cyber-bullying have been bullied at some part of their life. Therefore, when they get an online platform to bully others, they make the most of it and ensure that they take revenge for what has happened to them in the past.
