You are required to write an informed essay of a “corpo- rate ethical/CSR incident”(within the past 2 years) outlining the organisation’s failure to meet their ethical/CSR responsibilities. For this essay you are required to: Find a recent newspaper article (within the last 2 years) about an organisation that has been reported for unethical business practice/s. You are required to attach a newspaper article to your case study.The organisation may be: - A multinational company (MNC) operating in Australia or overseas. - An Australian company engaged in business globally or within Australia. Identify and critically analyse the ethical responsibilities of the organisation doing business in Australia or overseas. This should also include the organisation’s code of conduct/ethics and consider whether it provides any guidance for dealing with such ethical/CSR issues. Discuss the issue in relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Apply the 10 Principles of the United Na- tions Global Compact as a framework to analyse the case https://www.unglobalcompact.org/what-is-gc/mission/ principles. Identify which UN Global Compact principle/s have been breached. Lush is a leading cosmetic brand from UK. It has 951 stores worldwide. Lush has its business operation in Australia too. Mark Lincoln is Lush Australia director. It deals in freshly handmade cosmetic products employing more than 500 employees in Australia and New Zealand. The first stores of Lush opened in New South Wales in the year 1997 (Zhou, 2020). The products are 100% vegan and have wide range of bath bombs, shampoos, creams, shower gels, scrubs, moisturisers, masks and much more. In 2015, it even received Australian retailer of the year Award. It has converted bath time of a person into joyful experience.
Business Ethics
While operating in Australia there are certain ethical responsibilities, which a company needs adherence to. The business needs to respect the privacy of individuals while communicating and negotiating with them. It should follow and comply with Competition and consumer Act 2010, intellectual property and managing data security and privacy. According to Dolan et al. (2019), the environmental impact of its operations and products need to be considered by following environmental protection laws.
In addition to this, Williams (2018) believes that reducing carbon footprint, minimising waste, managing disposal, promoting actively and participating green causes as well as campaigns need to be taken care of. They should also pay heed to the employment practices prevalent in the company such as pay scale and workplace environment, political affiliations, meeting tax obligations, social initiatives and the approach towards gender equality, diversity and inclusion, opportunities for differently abled persons and behaviour towards the LGBTQ community.
Issue in Relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
The Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact are derived from: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Labour Organisation’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, the Rio declaration on Environment and Development and the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (Rasche, 2020).
Human Rights
The cases of sexual harassment, homophobic comments and bullying were reported, which were ignored at management’s side. The unavailability of P2 masks and usage of surgical masks lead to exposure to particle inhalation.
