Introduction
The magical number seven, plus or minus two, given by psychologist George Miller in the year 1956 is one of the most looked for psychological concept when it comes to defining the short-term memory stage of the multi-store memory model given by Atkinson-Shiifrin. Short-term memory can be defined as a system that is capable of temporarily storing and managing the information required to carry tasks, which are complex as well as cognitive in nature. Short-term memory can also be referred to as the active memory that is capable of storing but not manipulating a small amount of information that is readily available for short periods. Through one of the his most popular and widely cited articles Miller argued that number of objects an average human can hold in short term memory is 7±2. This argumentative essay shall demonstrate evidences supporting the claim while discussing different type of memory situations.
Thesis Statement
In psychology, it is vital to understand the uses and limits of human memory, particularly the uses and limits of short term memory with the help of the Miller’s Law of The Rule of 7 Plus or minus 2 indicating that an average human brain is capable of recording nearly 7 objects in its active or primary memory stage.
Coincidence between Absolute Judgment and Limits of Short-Term Memory
Absolute judgment in psychology is defined as a judgment in which a single stimulus is placed in a single category and stimuli are not compared against one another. Judgments in these cases are made without any comparison with the explicit standards (Raymond & Healy, 2017). Stimuli are subjected to stimulation against only one dimension. In one-dimensional absolute judgment task a person is subjected to stimuli that vary on a single dimension such as different tones varying on the same pitch and the response to the stimulus are then recorded. Performance the person subjected to this task were found in a perfect condition five or six different tomes or stimuli of the same pitch but as the number of stimuli started to increase the performance of the person subjected to the task began to decrease. This was then defined as one of information transmission, in which input was considered to be one out of the n possible stimuli and the output was one out of the n responses. It was then concluded that an average human’s maximum performance for one-dimensional absolute judgment can be in an information channel capacity category, which is capable of storing nearly 2 to 3 bits of information, corresponding to the ability of distinguishing between four and eight alternatives, which lies in the range of the...
