1. Introduction
With consistent growth in businesses, they require equivalent growth in their IT sector. Small businesses can increase the number of their workstations but with further growth and increasing demand of workstations, they require dedicated servers. Not all businesses can cope with management and upgradation of their servers. This is the point where the requirement of server management is felt by the businesses when they need to manage critical equipment and keep the servers running in order to keep the flow of business consistent [1].
The process of managing the infrastructure of servers by monitoring them continuously through various methods and tools can be defined as server management. This process helps in making critical applications of a business more agile and optimizes the performance of physical as well as virtual servers. Along with server management, obtaining server backups on a regular basis is a major task. Backup activity, as the name states, copies the data to preserve and restore it immediately in case of data loss due to any unforeseen situation.
This article aims at helping the reader understand server management, its structure, features, advantages and disadvantages along with improvements that it has gone through in the recent years. It also sheds light on the need of server management in current technology of Cloud Storage, Server Virtualization Monitoring Tools and Data Intelligence and further suggests methods of backing up servers.
2. Background
The role of a server in academia, private and public organizations has seen exponential growth in past few years. The necessity of servers has been significantly increased by the growth of world wide web, communication facilities and internet service providing facilities. None of the modern businesses can operate or access facilities in the absence of servers. Before the introduction of server management systems, most of the businesses lacked logging mechanism of various steps in their software life cycle. This article substantiates the importance of server management and the current trends where it is most applicable [2].
3. Server Management Technology
Server management environment has a network of systems or programs that accomplish different tasks. A server is a system that receives requests from one or more client systems which permit the client(s) to achieve certain tasks. A client is a system requesting permission to from servers to perform those tasks. One of the workstations is configured to be the server manager which acts as a tool to watch over the roles of the servers to be managed and is responsible for making configuration changes. It allows remote server management by smoothly connecting to remote desktops without the need of physical access.
3.1. Architecture
A server manager is designed to accomplish management of servers in an organization in order to reduce the total cost incurred on installation, configuration, maintenance and troubleshooting of the servers required to run the business. It manages different types of servers like web server, real-time communication server, mail server, proxy server, FTP server, Collaboration server, etc. These servers are categorized into application Servers and Software...
