#Week8 - Jennifer, Lina, Thi Ha (1) LING2248 – week 7 group exercise 2 Group members: Jennifer Tzortzis, Lina Kim, Thi Ha Thu Nguyen Dear Crystal, I'm so sorry to hear that life is getting you down at the moment! Goodness knows, it can be so tough when nothing seems to fit and little seems to be fulfilling L I'm not sure there's any specific advice I can give that will help bring life back its savour *sigh*. Although they mean well, it's sometimes quite galling to be reminded howwww much people LOVE YOU when you don't love yourself that much!! I've found that it's of some help to think of one's moods and feelings about the world as being similar to weather J Here are some obvious things about the weather: It's REAL! You can't CHANGE IT by wishing it away! If it's dark and rainy it really is dark and rainy and you can't alter it. It might be dark and rainy for two weeks in a row… BUTTT It will be sunny one day J It isn't under one's control as to when the sun comes out, but come out it will! ONE DAY! It really is the same with one's moods, I think. The wrong approach is to believe that they are illusions. THEY ARE REAL. Depression, anxiety, listlessness - these are as real as the weather = NOT UNDER ONE'S CONTROL. It’s NOT your fault! BUTTT Will they pass?? YES, they really will!!! In the same way that one has to accept the weather, so one has to accept how one feels about life sometimes… "Today's a crap day," is a perfectly realistic approach :D It's all about finding a kind of mental umbrella. "Hey-ho, it's raining inside. Well guess what?? It’s not MYYY fault and there's nothing I can do about it, but sit it out. But the sun may well come out tomorrow and when it does, I shall take full advantage." JJ I don't know if any of that is of any use *shrugs*, it may not seem it, and if so, I'm sorry L I just thought I'd drop you a line to wish you well in your search to find a little more pleasure and purpose in life!! Very best wishes (Signed) Stephen Fry LING2248-Tutorial 4 Worksheet LING2248 Tutorial 4 Worksheet ©Department of Linguistics, Macquarie University, 2018 1 Image Macro Memes, compressed language and restricted grammar First Step: Rewrite the key themes in ‘Born This Way’ in compressed language. (You don’t need to rewrite the whole song.) Some of the features of compressed language include: • Rebus – Letters represent syllables: b4, NE • Logograms – The use of numerals and symbols to represent words: &, @, 2 • Acronyms – LOL, TBH, CYA, IMHO • Prioritising consonants over vowels – Context dependent – aftr, cld, msg Remember to make use of the following linguistic devices: • Alliteration – Each word begins with the same sound/ letter • Onomatopoeia – Also known as ‘sound symbolism’, where words do reflect the meaning they are associated with; e.g. , meow, bang • Palindromes – Words or sets of words that can be read the same way backwards and forwards e.g. ‘race car’ • Oxymorons – A phrase/ statement made up of apparently contradictory parts – e.g. ‘festina lente’ ‘make haste slowly’ • Rhyme • Overstatement/ understatement • Repurposing parts of speech – For example, nouns become verbs Second Step: Can you compress the whole song into one tweet? Remember to incorporate at least one #hashtag 140 characters maximum Orthographic paralinguistics might be useful Now try 280 characters- is this easier? Tutorial 4 Worksheet ©Department of Linguistics, Macquarie University, 2018 2 LING2248 Third Step Write a Doge-speak version of the lyrics to Born This Way. Consider the Doge version of Romeo and Juliet presented in the Week 6 lecture: What light. So breaks. Such east. Very sun. Wow, Juliet. What Romeo. Such why. Very rose. Still rose. Very balcony. Such climb. Much love. So Propose. Wow, marriage. Very Tybalt. Much stab. What do? Such exile. Very Mantua. Much sad. So, priest? Much sleeping. Wow, tomb. Such poison. What dagger. Very dead. Wow, end. (after McCulloch, G. (February 6, 2014). A linguist explains the grammar of doge. Retrieved from http://the-toast.net/2014/02/06/linguist-explains-grammar-doge-wow/) Some of the features of Doge-speak (but not all) include: • Doge uses a restricted grammar • Single word or two word phrases – Note that there are always exceptions to this • Single words usually include ‘wow’ ‘amaze’ • Phrases usually begin with ‘such’ ‘very’ ‘many’ and ‘so’ • These words are used in a non-standard manner, often coming before nouns; nouns are irregularly pluralised etc… (Source: http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2014/021/8/8/doge_pencil_sketch_by_97kevinhuanle-d736k5b.jpg) Post the best of your efforts to the LING2248 iLearn Tutorial posts forum Tutorial 4 Worksheet ©Department of Linguistics, Macquarie University, 2018 3 LING2248 Lyrics to Born This Way It doesn't matter if you love him, or capital H-I-M Just put your paws up 'cause you were born this way, baby My mama told me when I was young We are all born superstars She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on In the glass of her boudoir "There's nothing wrong with loving who you are" She said, "'Cause he made you perfect, babe" "So hold your head up girl and you'll go far, Listen to me when I say" I'm beautiful in my way 'Cause God makes no mistakes I'm on the right track, baby I was born this way Don't hide yourself in regret Just love yourself and you're set I'm on the right track, baby I was born this way (Born this way) Oh there ain't no other way Baby I was born this way Baby I was born this way Oh there ain't no other way Baby I was born this way Right track baby I was born this way Don't be a drag, just be a queen Don't be a drag, just be a queen Don't be a drag, just be a queen Don't be don't be don't be Give yourself prudence And love your friends So we can rejoice your truth In the religion of the insecure I must be myself, respect my youth A different lover is not a sin Believe capital H-I-M (hey hey hey) I love my life I love this record and Mi amore vole fe, yah I'm beautiful in my way 'Cause God makes no mistakes I'm on the right track, baby I was born this way Don't hide yourself in regret Just love yourself and you're set I'm on the right track, baby I was born this way Tutorial 4 Worksheet ©Department of Linguistics, Macquarie University, 2018 4 LING2248 Oh there ain't no other way Baby I was born this way Baby I was born this way Oh there ain't no other way Baby I was born this way Right track, baby I was born this way Don't be a drag, just be a queen Whether you're broke or evergreen You're black, white, beige, chola descent You're Lebanese, you're Orient Whether life's disabilities Left you outcast, bullied, or teased Rejoice and love yourself today 'Cause baby you were born this way No matter gay, straight, or bi Lesbian, transgendered life I'm on the right track baby I was born to survive No matter black, white or beige Chola or orient made I'm on the right track baby I was born to be brave I'm beautiful in my way 'Cause God makes no mistakes I'm on the right track, baby I was born this way Don't hide yourself in regret Just love yourself and you're set I'm on the right track, baby I was born this way yeah Oh there ain't no other way Baby I was born this way Baby I was born this way (Born this way) Oh there ain't no other way Baby I was born this way Right track, baby I was born this way I was born this way hey I was born this way hey I'm on the right track baby I was born this way hey I was born this way hey I was born this way hey I'm on the right track baby I was born this way hey Same D.N.A. but born this way Same D.N.A. but born this way Songwriters: Stefani Germanotta / Jeppe Laursen / Fernando Garibay / Paul Blair Born This Way lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC, Warner/Chappell Music, Inc, Universal Music Publishing Group, Kobalt Music Publishing Ltd. Tutorial 4 Worksheet ©Department of Linguistics, Macquarie University, 2018 5 LING2248 Orthographic Paralinguistics, Emoticons, and Emoji Meaning is created by more than just what we say: Paralanguage= how we say it The term ‘paralanguage’ relates to sound-related features of the interaction such as manipulations of pitch, tone, rhythm, and silence Nonverbal Cues= what we do when we are saying it ‘Nonverbal cues’ are features of interaction such as gesture, gaze, stance, and posture Question: How do we compensate for this when we are online, and can’t see who we are talking to? Answer: Orthographic paralinguistics* -the written system used to express paralanguage and nonverbal cues\ *Also known as ‘CMC cues’ In computer medicated communication, this includes such textual features as: - The use of ALL UPPERCASE - The use of asterisks *sigh* - Chronemics: “nonverbal, time-related cues such as pauses, time of day, and silence” (Kalman & Rafaeli, 2011, p.55) - Creative use (or non-use) of punctuation marks !!!?? - Letter repetition ‘squeeeeeee’ - The use of emoticons :) or emoji - Any others?? Your Task: Form a group, and apply appropriate CMC cues to enhance, mitigate, or change the meaning to one or more of the following texts. The URLS are included so that you can see
