How did the prevailing social conditions influence the child saving movement, and why?
Prevailing social conditions did influence th
e child saving movement and there were reasons behind such influence. The changing socio-economic role of women influenced the movement thoroughly. The middle-class women gradually started to extend their homemaking roles into public services and towards economic resources to support the cause of child welfare (Vito, Maahs & Holmes, 2007). It is noteworthy that the “child savers defended the importance of the home, of family life, and parental supervision. These institutions traditionally gave purpose to a woman’s life” (Vito, Maahs & Holmes, 2007). And this purposefulness acted as a social influence on the child saving movement.
What other alternatives could have been proposed to the child saving movement?
The child saving movement was an essential one which apparently did not have any alternative. But some alternatives to the movement were proposed. For an instance, it was proposed that children whose welfare was under threat could be enlightened with the Puritanical values of hard labor (Simmons, 2017). Some also suggested that such children should be transferred to rural settings that were ideal for providing those essential things that the urban setup could not.
