Part I: Evidence-based Report
Introduction
The concern for environmental sustainability is an aggravating aspect that has been facing the high pressure of competition and is increasingly being paid attention to in the business sector. The failure to manage the sustainability issues can be substantial damage to the company and it might affect the business performance. This report examines the effectiveness of environmental sustainability in business practices and provides an evidence-based analysis of the business prospects regarding the use of sustainability measures and the performance standards of the company. Researchers have often argued fact that companies that skip the sustainability aspects might lose business and the companies might be at a risk in an already volatile marketplace. The consequent impact of climate change has been a heavily addressed matter and the importance of the environmental aspects has been increasingly growing to be a significant factor influencing business success. It is relevant to mention that embedded sustainability and environmental efforts have a clear and positive impact on business performance.
Aspects of Competitive Advantage
The strategic value of sustainability has been a significant element of the stakeholders and therefore the regular emphasis by the stakeholders has been subjected to a continual iteration with the agenda of sustainability (Vesal et al., 2019). This has been reflected in terms of the relationship of the company with the stakeholders regarding stakeholder cooperation. A study in the gold mining industry has confirmed that stakeholder relationships are heavily influenced by the regulatory environment and the determining aspects of corporate social responsibility that have been highlighted as a major context.
Improvised Risk Management
Due to globalization the supply chain has considerably expanded and has become more vulnerable to natural disasters and civil conflict. Besides the aspect of climate change and water scarcity have become an increased risk in terms of sustainability concerns. Research has reported that the losses from environmental and sustainable concerns can be as high as 70%. For instance, Bunge, an agribusiness firm, reported losing 56 million dollars in a quarter in its bioenergy and sugar segments because of drought. The flood of 2011 in Thailand, harmed 160 companies in the textile industry and nearly halted Global garment production by increasing global prices by at least 28% (Shao et al., 2020). To address this the supply chain of companies like Mars, Unilever and Nespresso have invested in the Rainforest Alliance certification to help the farmers deal with climate volatility, and reduce and enhance the resilience to drought and humidity by ensuring to have better prospects for the long-term supply of the agricultural products. Companies that are experiencing risk in manufacturing due to resource depletion have to be considered in terms of resource usage. Coca-Cola faced a water shortage in India and it was forced to shut down its plants in 2004 (Khan et al., 2020). After this, the company heavily invested to reduce water use and addressed it with an effective investment to improve the water quality in the communities in which it operates.
