    Mortgage is actually a debt instrument which is used while purchasing a big asset. The bank keeps the ownership of one of the asset of the purchaser in exchange of loan given to him. After paying off the whole principal and interest of the loan, the asset is given back by the bank to its original owner. If the party default to pay off the loan then the asset will come in the ownership of the bank. Mortgage is generally useful in purchasing house or land.
