The case of the Crying Baby
Part I – Why does this baby cry so much?
1) In the first few months of life, Kayla had developed certain symptoms like eyes were filled with tears and she would whole day and almost whole night. Kayla also had intermittent fevers. Her mother also noticed a lump that would come out from the groin area sometimes. Kayla also developed a peculiar red rash near her genitals. Kayla’s diapers were sometimes coated with a yellowish discharge but were never wet.
2) The nurses and doctors told that Sara was just being anxious about her daughter as she was a new mother. The nurses and doctors suggested changing diapers frequently and use of A&D ointment for the rash. The vaginal discharge was brushed off as the reaction to withdrawal of her mother’s hormones.
3) Hernia is the term given to the abnormal growth of tissue or organ from their cavity wall. Most of the hernia are not problematic or life-threatening, but some may require surgical removal. This would have been a source of Kayla’s medical problems as an inguinal hernia may obstruct the normal growth and development.
4) Sara was feeling “victimized” in the ordeal as she was constantly being told by the doctors and nurses that she is thinking too much about her daughter. She also did not join her work so that she could take care of Kayla as suggested by her grandmothers. Also, when Kayla developed red color due to high fever, her mother was told that she should have manage her sun exposure. Thus, being held responsible for her daughter’s problems, made Kayla feel victimized.
