As a tax agent, firstly we have delayed a lot in filing income tax return. The due date of lodging return for FY 2011-12 was 31st October,
2012. The lodgment process is to file your tax returns on your own or through a tax agent before 31st October. Lodgment should include details of your income known as assessable income. Further this amount can be reduced by claiming deductions in the form of expenses that you incurred specifically related to work and same has not been reimbursed by employer. You can offset taxes and your PAYG from your taxes. Further in case anything payable , complete the payment and if refundable amount will be refunded once return is processed. Try to file your returns before the due date to avoid penalties and late fees.

There are three options of lodgment –
· Lodge online with mytax - This is an easy way of preparing if you are aware of the process
· Lodge with a registered tax agent - Tax Agent will make sure your tax file is upto date
· Lodge a paper return - Paper return is for someone who is not very comfortable with computers

Self assessment process ensures that you are aware about the details to be shown in your tax return. Ignore or not being aware of the details to be shown cannot be excused. Self assessment process puts the onus of showing all the details and income to be included in assessable income and the information provided are true and fair. An individual is required to self assess their income , assets , liabilities etc.
