Main theme of “Young Mother Sewing”
The painting “Young mother sewing” by Mary Cassatt, replicates the daily activities of the artist’s daily role-play of growing up in a rich cultured family. The painting of the small girl leaning against the knee of the lady depicts the affection and care that a mother has towards her child. The girl also feels safe in the presence of her mother. The mother continues to keep doing her work of sewing without much ado. The theme by the painter depicted the affection for her nieces and nephews and the prevailing cultural interest in child rearing. During that time, she created paintings which depicted her thinking of showing the women caring behaviour towards their children and children alone.
This theme also is depicted in this paining being discussed here. Apparently, painting an image of sewing which, in itself, can be art has been a goal in more than one artistic work. The painter wanted to tell the audiences about the attributes of child rearing and the emotions attached with it and the relation between the mother and the child in a caring way. The poise of the lady sewing is seen here who goes unperturbed by the fact of the presence of her child with her and continues on to finish her work with a sense of calmness. The deep sense of security of the child is also depicted through this painting as the child feels safe and secure with her mother.
