Week 7 Questions for discussion: 1. Guest question from Siobhan! “Reflect on how neither religion nor gender is a set, monolithic 'thing' and instead, is something continually being redefined both within and across cultures. Can you contribute any critical analysis here, or cite specific examples that can illustrate this point?” 2. In any Australian university approved social research, Human Research Ethics clearance is required. At Macquarie University, this process is overseen by the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC). Obviously, conducting ethnographic research on religion in LGBTIQ social/cultural contexts has unique challenges that would require you to ensure the safety and satisfaction of all participants. This week, we have seen how both Peuman’s ethnographies and Dr. Irving’s own fieldwork deftly navigate the complex and potentially fraught field-world of Religion and LGBTIQ participants. If you were to conduct HREC approved fieldwork in LGBTIQ social spaces (religious or otherwise), how would you ethically approach your informants and anthropological research?
