M4 In chapter 11 of our textbook, the authors describe a framework for understanding prevention, early intervention, and treatment strategies for at risk youth. This framework is comprised of several different ways of thinking about these strategies, including the level of risk, the approach, and the degree to which the strategy targets the prevention or treatment of a problem.  This discussion will focus on the following three aspects of the approach continuum: · universal approaches, which are appropriate for all children, even those with low risk; · selected approaches, aimed at groups of young people who share some characteristic that increases their risk; and · indicated approaches, for youth who are at immediate risk for problem behavior or who have already begun to exhibit problem behavior. Chapter 12 outlines the core components of prevention and intervention strategies for at risk youth. These strategies help to build the areas that are most important in the lives of young people-- the "Five Cs" of Competency that we learned about in Chapter 5.
