Planetary nebulae are found all across the sky. Some of the brightest are listed in Chapter 13 of the Discovering the Universe Web site. With the help of star maps or Starry Night Enthusiast™ software, locate and observe as many planetary nebulae as possible on clear, Moonless nights, using the largest telescope at your disposal. Some of the more notable ones include: Little Dumbbell (M76), NGC 1535, Eskimo, Ghost of Jupiter, Owl (M97), Ring (M57), Blinking Planetary, Dumbbell, Saturn Nebula, and NGC 7662. Note and compare the various shapes of the different nebulae. In which cases can you see the central star?
