Social
and emotional characteristics are developed at the early stages of childhood. These characteristics are reflected in children’s engagement with the parents and the environment. Children often face issues regarding behavioral and social aspects that lead to degraded academic performance. Social and emotional development during early ages influence the wellbeing of children’s in the later phase of their life. Therefore it is important to understand the social, behavioral and emotional needs of children.
Theoretical perspective of understanding children’s needs
As a child grows as he or she develops different forms of communication methods such as verbal and nonverbal. Verbal communications include the use of vocabulary, speech and grammar to begin social interactions. While nonverbal includes gestures, facial reactions and many more. The advancement in social skills and conversations improve when they start communicating with parents enhancing the relationship (Bierman, Mathis & Domitrovich, 2018). Till 18 months of age toddlers generally communicate to refuse, request and call for attention through gestures and making different sounds. From 18 to 36 months children begin using the words which repeatedly hit their ears. One may argue that proper training of communication can expedite the learning process. Along with communication kids also start developing their behavior. The psychological perspective plays an important role in understanding children’s behavior. Psychological perspectives generally include social cognitive, biological, and behaviorist theories. It is important to understand the environment or the surrounding of a child because behavior is influenced by the environment. Environment influences kids to behave accordingly in behaviorist theory. Social cognitive perspective is also referred to as observational learning theory.
