Please select TWO articles/reports for comparison from the long list of those readings available for this unit either as attached to the syllabus section of CANVAS, in the readings list or hyperlinked in the CANVAS modules. **you do not need to include the articles with the essay but ensure you should include the articles in your reference list** Once you have chosen your two articles you will then need to do a comparison of the philosophy, theory and pedagogy adopted by the educators/researchers discussed in the articles. Because you are making comparisons it is useful to choose articles where the approaches are different, this way you have more to discuss with the differences. For example, – choose one traditional (classical) and one contemporary theory of play. Start off by exploring the different philosophical and theoretical perspectives on play. Consider how the different philosophies/ theories offer different interpretations and approaches about play. Consider how the different theories offer different interpretations about play. 1. Introduction
In the general perspectives, play is a rejoicing task, in which usually young people get involved, and which does not service much of practical purposes apart from physical and mental exercise. However, a closer and more scientific o
bservation using the psychological and sociological aspects, play is identified as a task that reflects the social norms, the human nature, instincts and psychological thought process and social and cultural impressions on perspectives. Over the years the perspectives of play and its purposes as well as approach has changed, evolving from the traditional to modern contemporary formats. In the current essay the diverse view of play as a tool for development of children, teenagers and even young adults in educational organisations, posing as the learning environment have been discussed in a critical tone and has included the role of teachers, parents and playmates in the context of theories and frameworks of psychology and learning for engrossing comprehension.
Play and Environment
Over the decades the theories of play have changed and while in the earlier times the traditional theories of play, namely – the Surplus Theory and Growth Theory presented physical and social attributes more, while the contemporary theories such as Constructive theory and Instinct-Practice Theory have focused on the social and cultural impact of psychological aspects. It is worth the mention that the contemporary theories do not consider play as an action only meant for physical exercise, while the traditional theories does not consider the psychological factors with play and consider them separate development aspects.
As opined by Wood and Attfield (2005), in the surplus theory, which is among the most criticised yet highly believed theories, suggests that play is the mode of burning out the energy in children, which remains restrained in the form of social, parental and educational organisations’ rules and regulation imposing, hinting at play being closely associated to physical activity. As described by Malone, Birrell, Boyle and Gray (2015), Growth theory of play propagates the idea that play is the form of learning their behaviour and activities needed in the future to survive and has the ability to shape the personality of a grown up person.
Taking a different approach to play and its underlying purposes, the Constructive theory, as assessed by Dowdell, Gray and Malone (2011), perceives play as the practice ground of social and cultural activities, which over time become lasting impressions on the mind of the children, helping in the development of constructive thinking. The Instinct-Practice theory is a simplistic and somewhat similar form of Constructive theory, which puts forward the idea that play, is the exercise, which gives the children their ability to practice their instinct, which becomes a practices tool for them for their future in the social and cultural context.
History is a major influence of child development, as they aspects of play are deeply impacted by history of a place, its political orientation, society and culture. As identified by Gill (2011), history shapes the cultural values of a society, which is reflected in children play, which is regulated and allowed by adults, carrying the influence of their history. The awareness about the values of society is important for the children to acknowledge are derived from the historical events and developments, which prioritise the aspects that were influential in those historical events and are carefully, weaved into the children’s play at educational organisations.
On the other hand, it is found that the ecological aspects are also effective in determining the nature of play, the set rules and the way they help in future social alignment. As mentioned by Fleer (2013), the ecology of a place, determines the livelihood and its quality, gradually finding its way to the core areas of concentration and finally being incorporated in the child’s play at schools. It is found that there...
