Pitney Bowes, headquartered in Connecticut, is an American provider of e-commerce solutions and shipping and mailing products. The company’s machines process or produce an average of 150 million mail pieces each day. Pitney Bowes’s “Enterprise Mail Business” develops, sells, and services large machines called Inserters. These machines help banks and healthcare providers put exactly the right piece of mail in the right-sized envelope. For one bank, such a machine assembled 900 million mail pieces in a year. Most of the machines produce 20,000 letters per hour. With this level of automated production, Pitney Bowes and its clients also produce a huge volume of data every day. Pitney Bowes wants to analyze data generated from these mailing machines to predict faults in the machines in advance to prevent any outage and fix machines before they break down. Pitney Bowes adopted GE Predix, a cloudbased platform designed for the industrial Internet. The Predix platform analyzes sensor data of machines and by using real-time analytics, gives powerful insights that facilitate making decisions. Besides outage prevention, analytics by Predix help in reducing downtime and in increasing productivity. The overall analysis of sensor data by Predix increased productivity and the performance of the machines.
