Picoso is a Mexican restaurant franchise with several locations operating on the Sunshine Coast. Picoso has conducted a strategic review of its operations as part of its annual strategic business planning process. In the course of doing SWOT analysis, the franchise identified in addition to their traditional eat in or take away options, home delivery needed to be added to their services. They currently have a website where customers can place take away orders for pick up at their stores. Work is currently progressing on updating the web based system to incorporate home delivery. This would enable Picoso to serve a greater range of customers. Picoso has also identified that offering food delivery services will be able to leverage off its existing strong brand recognition at marginal cost.

The CEO of the franchise group (Mr El Paso) has commissioned your consultancy firm, NMC Consultancy, to prepare a formal business management report to explain the benefits of developing a customer mobile application to support their business and their new delivery service. In particular Mr El Paso and his associates are interested in topics detailed below in section 3.2

3.2 Topics to be addressed

3.2.1 Topic 1

The benefits of a mobile application compared to a web based order entry system for the Picoso franchise. Establish a scholarly supported argument on the volume of business selling via mobile apps as opposed to web based ordering systems.

3.2.2 Topic 2

A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) for in-house development of the front-end of a mobile application for Picoso’s online services including placing orders, which helps the management to understand the scope and complexity of the in-house development project. Also, the WBS will be useful at the next stage of the project to study the project’s economic and schedule feasibilities if the management approves this option. No cost and schedule estimation is required at this stage.

Note: The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) defines WBS as a "deliverable oriented hierarchical decomposition of the work to be executed by the project team”.

3.2.3 Topic 3

Alternatives to in-house development of a mobile application that Pisoso might pursue. Considering your responses to Topics 1 and 2, what are your recommendations and why?
