PESTLE analysis and Porter's 5 forces
BUSI 1210 Individual Management Report Instructions BUSI 1210 Essentials of Management Individual Management Report Instructions 1.0 Overview The Individual Management Report (IMR) is designed to allow learners an opportunity to exercise their understanding of various management theories and apply them to a case study. Completion of this assignment will help learners become familiar with analyzing business information and to practice business report-writing skills. This assignment requires you to analyze the information within a selected case study and conduct external research about the company that is the subject of the case. Imagine that you are a management consultant who has been asked to examine the existing business situation and come up with an analysis of the business environment. The report you hand in will serve as a sort of consulting report to the owners or senior management of the business described in the case. 1.1 Individual Work Please note that this assignment is an individual assessment. No collaboration between learners is permitted, including sharing their research, analyses, writing and ideas. Under no circumstances should learners share their work with each other during the course, before or after submission. Doing so will be construed as an academic integrity violation and will be treated as such. 2.0 Case Studies “A case study is a detailed study of a specific subject, such as a person, group, place, event, organization, or phenomenon. Case studies are commonly used in social, educational, clinical, and business research.” 1 Business cases are taught in business schools around the world because they are excellent vehicles in which learners can build the critical thinking skills and confidence needed to firmly take a stand and persuasively express their ideas and arguments. You will be assigned a specific case study by your instructor. Please read over the case at least a couple of times so that you understand the business situation being described. You will be developing two specific analyses using two analysis tools. 3.0 Your Report Your report will consist of two sections, each of which is made up of two components: Section I PESTLE Diagram PESTLE Summary Section II Porter’s Five Forces Diagram Porter’s Five Forces Summary You do not need an introduction or conclusion in the report, just the two sections listed. A title page is also not necessary but may be included. Refer to section 4.0 for a starter list of resources you can refer to for further information about PESTLE and Porter’s Five Forces. https://www.scribbr.com/methodology/case-study/1 3.1 Section I: PESTLE For this section, create a PESTLE diagram. Feel free to use a template, or create one from scratch using free online graphics software such as canva.com. Keep the diagram visually simple — it doesn’t need to be beautiful! Focus on readability and clarity. A simple, readable black and white diagram is preferable to one that has a dozen different colours and eye-catching icons. Remember that the purpose of this diagram is to inform, not entertain. Perform the required research to conduct a fulsome PESTLE analysis of the business environment that is relevant to the organization in the selected case. Fill the PESTLE diagram with point-form entries. The expectation is that the analysis will be rich; to accomplish this, provide at least three points for each factor (Political, Economic, Social, etc.) of the PESTLE. At minimum, you will have have 18 points listed, three for each of the six factors. More than six points per factor would be excessive for this assignment, so please keep it between 3-6. In the summary for this section, explain each point you have included in the diagram and provide the reference you used for each point. For example, under ECONOMIC, one of the points in the PESTLE diagram might be “lending rates at 7%, and expected to increase to 8.5%.” In the summary, we might read “Royal Bank of Canada has announced that they will be raising their commercial lending rates from 7% to 8.5% in 2024. This impacts the business negatively as the firm is servicing a large commercial debt that will be renewing in 2024.” (Massoub, 2023). Note that in the example, there is an explanation as to why this point was included in the PESTLE. The increase in lending rates is relevant because the business (presumably detailed in the case) has a large commercial debt that is due for term renewal in 2024. At the end is an in-text citation, so we know the writer drew this information from a source written by someone whose surname is Massoub, and the source was published in 2023. With at least 18 points in a PESTLE, you can expect to write 18+ of these brief explanations. Remember you have to describe the point fully, mention why it is relevant to the organization, and include an in-text citation at the end. As you write the summary, please include headings for each of the PESTLE factors: Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental. Group the appropriate explanations under each heading in the order that they appear in the diagram. Below the summary for the PESTLE, include a properly formatted references list that ties in to the in-text citations you include. Be sure to use the citation tools built in to Google Docs or Word. 3.2 Section II: Porter’s Five Forces Similar to the PESTLE section, for Section II you will be creating a Porter’s Five Forces diagram. Again feel free to use a template or create one from scratch. Readability and clarity are far more important than a spiffy design. Remember that the priority is to inform. If you can do that well and also put together a great design then feel free! Note however you won’t be graded on your design skills. Again, perform the required research to inform your Five Forces analysis. Just like in the PESTLE analysis please include at least three of the most important and relevant points for each force. Again, more than six points is excessive, so stick to 3-6 points for each of the five forces. You will end up with at least 15 points in this diagram. In the summary for this section, explain each point (don’t forget to explain why it is relevant) you have included in the diagram and provide the reference you used for each point, similar to what you did for the PESTLE. Include in-text citations at the end of each explanation. When writing the summary use headings: Threat of New Entrants, Bargaining Power of Suppliers, etc. Group your explanations under each heading as appropriate and list them in the same order as you have them in your Five Forces diagram. There is an extra step for Porter’s Five Forces: after filling out each force with points, rate each force HIGH, MEDIUM, or LOW. Then to conclude this section, after all of the forces have been explained in the summary, write how you would rate the industry in terms of risk for an investor or someone who wants to enter the industry with a new business, again using HIGH, MEDIUM or LOW. Use 2-3 sentences to explain your overall rating for the industry, referring to the analysis you’ve done. 4.0 Resources What follows are a few resources you can use to help guide you in your analysis. Don’t limit yourself to what’s here, and don’t forget to use the KPU library. PESTLE University of Sydney (Library Guide) https://libguides.library.usyd.edu.au/c.php?g=508107&p=5994242 Pestle Analysis https://pestleanalysis.com/pest-analysis/ Porter’s Five Forces Harvard Business School https://www.isc.hbs.edu/strategy/business-strategy/Pages/the-five-forces.aspx Strategic Management Insight https://strategicmanagementinsight.com/tools/porters-five-forces/ 5.0 References The sources you use as references in your work must be credible. Remember to avoid citing Wikipedia, but looking at the references used on Wikipedia pages might not be a bad place to start researching. Also, don’t forget the rules for citations: • Include properly formatted in-text citations. • Provide an alphabetical list of references at the end of your work. • Everything must be in APA 7th ed. format. 6.0 Formatting Above all, before you submit your work, please make sure it is readable. If I can’t read it, I can’t grade it, and work I can’t properly grade will be assigned a zero. Don’t spend time on fancy title pages or frames or picking out special fonts. You should only have two fonts at most in a single document: one for headings, another for body text. Look at this document for example—the headings are a sans serif font, and the body text is a serif font, Helvetica Neue and Georgia, respectively. It’s clean and readable. I’d rather you spend more time on your research and content rather than on page design! For this assignment: • Use a 12-point, serif font for body text, such as Times New Roman, Georgia, or Palatino. • Use a sans serif font for headings, such as Helvetica, Arial, or Futura. • (Alternatively you can use a single font for both body text and headings, but in that case please use a serif font.) • Use 1.5 lines spacing between lines. • Note that a title page is not necessary, but if you don’t include one, please be sure your name and student ID is in a header or footer. • Submit your work as a PDF. All Rights Reserved Abstract “Think before you print” has become the global catchphrase for environmental protection. As a result, paper companies around the world are encountering unprecedented challenges. However, a good ex- ample of business sustainability has been created by a Thai company known as SCG Packaging. The company was supposed to cease to exist long before, but it managed to survive by adopting a sus- tainable business model. The sustainable business model is a long-term company development strat- egy that prioritizes customer and firm values while also considering societal and environmental needs in how business is performed (Bocken, et.al., 2019). Although SCG Packaging is successful in vari- ous countries of the Southeast Asian (known as ASEAN countries) region, the question remains: what should SCG Packaging do to enhance its business sustainability, while ensuring its strategic position and maximizing profitability? Furthermore, despite the fact that the food packaging industry is growing at an exponential rate around the world, particularly in the ASEAN region, the company lags behind in the race for sustainable food packaging. What advice would you give to SCG Packaging in order to ensure the company’s long-term sustainability and increase its market share in the packaging indus- try?
