PART ONE: Analyze Photo Read in SMG chapter 28: Analyzing Visuals (704-717). Pay particular attention to the Criteria for Analyzing Visuals on pages 706-707, and how the sample student completed the criteria for his chosen photo (SMG pages 710-711) and wrote his essay (SMG 712-715). Put the name of the photo in the subject box. Then, using the criteria in SMG (706-707) as they apply, students will examine the key components and historical contexts of the photo: Composition, people or image, scene, words, and tone. Rhetorical context, social context, historical context, and intertextuality. Link to photo: http://100photos.time.com/photos/stanley-forman-fire-escape-collapse If the photo link does not open just google the name of the photo. The point is to research the photo and determine its significance. Use sources found on the internet. PART TWO: Essay In preparation for writing essay #2 about a famous photograph (using at least three written sources in addition to the photo and 750-850 words), run the above photo through SMG’s criteria (706-707). The essay will include a discussion of why the photo merits such attention. In addition, consider the photo topic’s lingering legacy. Use the Criteria for Analyzing Visuals such as the example in the text (710-711) written about the photo Emerging Man. Fill it out for your chosen photo as a basis of examining the photo and providing necessary information from research for the essay. See how the sample student essays addressed their photos. **This assignment requires you to first ANALYZE the photo using the criteria in SMG pages 706-707 and then start your essay on the photo**

Fire Escape Collapse
Part 1: Visualization
The picture shows two individuals, a child and a young woman falling from the collapsed fire escape of an apartment that is burning on Marlborough St
reets in Boston on July 22, 1975. The image is a monochrome taken by a motorized camera. Fire Escape Collapsed also knows as Fire on Marlborough Street consists of nineteen-year-old Diana Bryant and her 2-year-old niece Tiare Jones. This scene is also evident in the picture where there is chaos, signs of calamity, and anxiety in the environment. The woman’s hand is placed and the angle left to right of that hand railing comparison to the angle of the roof.
Despite narrating a tragic event, the photograph mostly is light-toned and so, is high-key. It is surprising to notice that there is a contradiction between the tone set and that is evident in the photograph. The two women in the photo, Diana Bryant and her niece Tiare Jones were waiting along with a fireman on the fifth floor of their apartment. The rhetoric has it that the city of Boston took to major activity within twenty-four hours of this tragedy. It is indeed horrific to imagine that the photograph brought home the third eye view of escape which leads to death. It is evident that the picture depicts something characteristic of slum life and portrayed the dangers of fire escape. The social context has it that a systemic failure is fatal and screams of injustice. The story responds to the fact that the building perhaps was denied social safety and security.
Intertextuality: The photograph might have done so to avoid external interferences and only record the aspects of American bravery. While he does that excellently, he misses the fact that systematic failure to reduce fire escapes is also important to be highlighted.
Part 2: Essay
The words that read, “I was shooting as they were falling-then I turned away. It dawned on me what was happening, and I did...
