The trend of women changing their last nam
es after their marriages took place emerged during the ninth century when the doctrine of coverture emerged. As a result of the doctrine coupled with the wishes of women to become one with their husbands, they took the family name of the husbands. According to my perception, I consider it unnecessary to change the surname of women after marriage as there seems to be no logic regarding that. Therefore, in a way I support the women who retain their own last names after they get married. This is mostly because, with the turn of the century, the laws, rules and regulations have transformed to a great extent. As a result of these changes, it is no longer deemed necessary to change the surname of women after marriage. In addition to that, changing of the surnames also involves a lot of hassle. This is observed when women are compelled to apply for new passports and driving licenses after the change of surnames during marriage. There are also women who use hyphenated names after marriage. I think that is also a feasible option, however, the hassle of changing names remains.
