First Short Paper Assignment
For our first assignment, read the poem “Easter Morning’” that appears below. Explicate the poem using the techniques we have been using in class. Try to identify the speaker or the poem and the audience they are addressing. Once you have an idea of these try to figure what the poet is trying to say with the poem. You can do this by speaking about tone, mood, and/or how the poetic devices the poet use are working in the poem. It is a good idea to offer textual support for any claims. Pull out pieces of text as evidence of your claims. Do this by putting lines in quotation marks and citing it with the line numbers). Typically you would also include the poet’s name, but I am not revealing the poet for a reason I will later reveal. This paper should be a minimum of 11/2 pages, but longer is probably better.

Easter Morning
Had I only known
I would have smiled wider
Twirled longer
Become a blur in blue organdy*
You came as on other Sunday mornings
Gift bound
Was there some resolve wrapped-hidden
Among the colored eggs?
Did you know it was the last time ever?
Did you know that little girl’s whose
Fathers come no more
Have irreparable holes in their hearts?
Had I only known
I would have smiled wider
Twirled longer
Become a blur of blue organdy
*Organdy- a fabric that was often used to make fancy dresses for little girls
