Once you have completed the reading and documentary, please create a new post telling us about your reaction to the practices of the Nacirema and the worldwide delicacies shown in the documentary. Are there any foods you would not eat and why? Is your view of these cultural delicacies ethnocentric? (300-500 words is good enough)
Part II:Write a short respond after reading the post below:The Nacirema and the worldwide delicacies demonstrate how our cultures manifest the beliefs and traditions that our ancestors instilled and how these cultural traditions have influenced our view of different cultures. I think it is very important to respect each culture and its traditions, first, we have to study the reason for their actions before judging. In the case of the body ritual among the Nacirema, it is not something strange for me, as a new yorker I am used to interacting with different cultures daily, and if we realize a lot of new yorkers decorate their body with tattoos, they have different piercings and alterations in some areas of their body. Walking in the streets of New York I have seen people with lip piercings, tongue designs, large ear piercings, and even horn implants. Naciremas also believe in the power of magical potions that are healing and essential to survive according to their belief and this is exactlyhow we believe in curative effects of some plants ,every time I am sick my mom makes me teas out of natural plants that actually help me to feel better just like the Nacirema belivesin their potions , the only different is that the Naciremasrewards the medicine man with charms .
The worldwide Delicacies It is somewhat interesting for me. I am personally a delicate (picky) person with what I eat but that does not prevent me from respecting what other people decide to ingest. The documentary by National Geographic shows different culinary traditions that bring many social polemics. These controversies are because many people tempt to judge what other people eat. I wouldn't eat any of the traditional dishes presented in the documentary, however, I do not judge the people who decide to ingest them. The dish that impressed me most was the rat, I think the last thing I would eat in life is a rat because anything infected by a rat has a bacteria call Salmonellosis what can cause my diseases, also street rats can be contaminated with deathly diseases, but in the west part of Africa, the rat is a succulent dish and has a long preparation process, because These rats are not stray but they are fed and trapped in a skillet especially to eat it, according to the natives of West Africa, the rat has many health benefits and its a high source of protein, the west African natives only eat it in special gatherings .
The Nacirema and The Worldwide Delicacies show and describe many traditions that I would never be part of or follow, but this doesn't make my point of view of this cultures ethnocentric, because even do I will never practice them, I do respect them without judging their reasons, as I said before every culture have their own belives and an explanation of their acts .
